They cut GREEN FINCH because it doesn't directly further the plot.

i don't think they should cut it though. I think it's amazing.
I'd really love to see this movie happen. I agree that it could pick up steam if Dreamgirls is a hit. I think alot of movie musical projects are kind of waiting.
I think Sweeney is such a unique concept for a movie musical, that it will surely be brought to the screen someday.
Well, here's one Sondheim fanatic who thinks that Logan is right to cut all of those songs, with the possible exception of "Green Finch." I think that "Pretty Women" should probably be cut as well.
Actually, I could see "Epiphany" working if the whole "All right, you sir!" section were cut. If the performance and filming of it were done proplerly (by which I mean as low-key as possible). I think it might work onscren. I would be inclined to just go from " . . .For the rest of us death will be a relief, We all deserve to die," to "And I will get him back . . ."
Basically, though, I really question whether there's any way to make this material work as a movie. A film of the Bond play, however, might be very effective.

Sadly, that won't keep them from cutting it.
I really hope this project comes to fruition.
I think that the likelyhood of this being made is slipping away. A studio would need to be pretty brave to tackle it, so I am still hoping, but shortsightedness due to the poor showings of huge bway hits like Phantom, Rent and Producers will keep this on the back burner. I do think that Dreamgirls has a chance to be a hit, but I dont think it will translate into enthusiasm to make movie musicals. I also think Hairspray will disappoint...just a prediction.
That said, my first choice for Mrs. Lovett is always going to be Meryl Streep. If Burton directs it, then Cyndi Lauper could be a very fun choice.

THANK YOU!
I was so unimpressed with Patti LuPone.
YES it was a novalty to see her live, but I couldn't tell if she was making an acting choice to be so uninvolved, or if she was like "I'm Patti LuPone. I don't have to work."
