Just felt like sharing.
The Cast Recording of Sweet Charity has been pushed back till July, 12. According to all the music sites.
That seems like forever! Damn, I'm really anticipating to hear a newer version of this score.

It might not happen
If the reviews are brutal, it may fold soon & there goes the CD.Time will tell. Critics normally, when they smell blood, go for the jugular. This has never happened (closing a show on the road & than reopening it) & since it had weak reviews going in, I do not think the reviews will be pretty

Posted: 3/31/05 at 8:12pmDo you really expect this cast CD to compare to the original?

Mr Roxy..
This show did not have "weak reviews" until it was in Boston. AND...the Mixed to good reviews is got before Boston are typical of ANY show in a preview period. Read ALL the reviews....MN, Chicago, AND papers and media OTHER than the Boston Globe, hell, there were people posting here giving the show good to great reviews.
And, it had weak reviews in Boston "because the critics smelled blood and went for the jugular!"
It's getting frustrating and tiring seeing these posts about how bad the reviews for this show were!!

Posted: 3/31/05 at 8:35pmI have a pretty wild imagination, but I CANNOT imagine Applegate in Verdon's shoes. Enough said.

Justme, I agree. People who haven't seen the show need to stop talking sh*t.
Oh, and on the comment about Christina being a weak singer - All I have to say is - since when is Gwen Verdon, Shirley Maclaine, Ann Reinking, Debbie Allen, and Bebe Neuwirth considered strong singers?
Mustang, who said Applegate is trying to fill Verdon's shoes? No one is saying that. So you can shut it with that nonsense.

We shall see what the critics say. I simply think they will not be good. I hope I am wrong . We will see how it plays out in the end

Well maybe you shouldn't make your little assumptions until you have seen the show for yourself.
You didn't even answer my question about the whole weak singing issue. Guess I'm right!

Ijay,
I never said Applegate could fill Gwen's shoes. (Heaven forbid!)
What an unthinkable thought. I said I cannot imagine her even standing in those shoes. And at $100!!!! Not out of MY pocket.

When I see an offering for discounted tickets, we will see the show & than decide. Very rarely do we pay full price for anything
I will take back any statements re her singing voice until I have actually heard her. My statements about the critics is based on 40 plus years of theater going. I could be right & I could be wrong. If I am wrong, I will publicly say so on this board. If the critics bring it up & agree her voice is not up to par, will you say you were wrong? . I think this is fair

I saw the show in Boston.
Charlotte was wonderful and Denis was charming.
However, this production extracted all the grit and Fellini from the Fosse original and tried to make it a retro-60's boisterous musical. And it doesn't really work.
Fosse made it sizzling and gritty. His Fandango Ballroom was a pit and you could feel the smoke in the air while this production's Fandango Ballroom looks like somewhere I might take kids to for a family meal. Take away the scantily clad women and the shady men and it's a fine joint!
This is what this productio is suffering from. The original title of the show was "The Small World of Charity." The point is that her world is seedy dance halls and broken dreams and fantastic daydreams.
The new production is failing to capture that world, which is its biggest flaw. Despite an uber-talented cast of folks, the production plays strangely untrue to the material.

gherbert,
Which ending did you see? I have read about two different ones being alternated, and both centered on Charity "getting back up on her feet and deciding she doesn't need any man to be happy". I was wondering if there was an unhappy ending version.
I am curious to see what they use in NY!

***BIG TIME SPOILER ALERT!***
I saw the very last performance in Boston.
The ending went like this, after "I Love to Cry at Weddings," Charity and Oscar roam into the park where Charity gushes about their wedding. Then Oscar let's it slip, "I just can't marry you." Saying that he has this childish fixation on purity and can't deal with all of the other men in Charity's life. Charity is shocked and upset and begs him to reconsider, but he doesn't relent. But then he stumbles and says that he doesn't want to stop seeing her, that maybe they should just take a break.
At this point I thought they were going for the ultimate cop out and leave them "on a break." What is this Friends? But it kept going.
Charity tells Oscar that he's a nice, decent fellow, but a little "too decent" for her. She doesn't want to have him wake up in the middle of the might and scream, "How many men was it?" or tell her to change because she looks too trashy. She says that she realizes that he is ashmaed of her and that she doesn't want to see him again.
Now the tables are turned and Oscar tries to get Charity to let him see her again, but she tells him to go. Then she swings around the lampost and repeats her opening line, "Did you ever have one of those perfect days? ----- This isn't it!" And goes into a reprise of "I'm the Bravest Individual" before the set clears and the band marches on as Charity joins them for "I'm a Brass Band" reprise.
It was a step in the right direction. More satisfying than the Good Fairy ending of the original, yet a little to forced for me. I don't know, but we have rooted for this woman the entire night and fallen in love with her, and to hear her admit that she is trashy and could never really have the life she dreamed of with a guy like Oscar is a little unsettling and depressing.
Also, one of the key points of Charity's character is that she is a dreamer and so hopeful that she never doubts tomorrow will be beautiful.
In fact she knows that and that is what she believes in, the hope that tomorrow will be more wonderful than the last. This ending sort of skewed that point a bit, for since Charity essentially dumped Oscar, our hope doesn't fly out to her as she dances off as it should. We still love Charity and feel for her, but it's not the same.
It was a game try, but it wasn't QUITE there.

I really didn't like the ending. So much happened in the last 5 minutes that it really didn't seem real. The rest of the show was phenomenal, i thought. I don't think it will do to bad in NY.
Gherbert~I completely agree it was too forced.
