Swing State, Goodman Theatre Chicago

Strong praise from Chicago Tribune's Chris Jones for Rebecca Gilman's new play running now at the Goodman Theatre through November 13. Gilman has debuted many plays there over the years. Tickets are inexpensive (mostly $50 and under). Some dates are up on Goldstar.

From the review:

"'Swing State' is perhaps the first of the great American post-COVID plays, the first work I’ve seen not just to wrestle with what happened during the pandemic but also to explore, and call out, the fundamental changes it has wrought on our collective psyche. This is especially true if the aforementioned pandemic involved a personal loss.

I’ve been reviewing Gilman’s plays for more than 25 years now. This is a new level from this particular writer, perhaps a consequence of having so much time to write and revise. She’s penned a mystery with enough narrative tension that no one at the Goodman Theatre moved a muscle. She has written about grief and bereavement, the personal consequences of the political and, as with so many great plays, her cast of characters is made up of fundamentally decent people all doing their best in near-impossible circumstances. The piece, an empathy-generating machine, deserves the broadest possible audience; it deserves a Broadway run."

Thanks for sharing. Rebecca Gillman is one of my favorite playwrights. I wish I still lived in Chicago so I could see this!
