Well according to reports, Oprah slipped it out initially, so it's not like she planned to say anything in the first place.

I personally always love to see true Broadway stars in almost every circumstance, so definitely LaChanze. The chance of that actually happening? I doubt it... if it's Oprah, everyone is going to want their little hands on it, so I doubt that LaChanze will have the opportunity to but you never know. Also, LaChanze is not that big of a name, even in the Broadway industry. Sure, she's big but she's not huge, IMO. No guaranteed star power there, like Nathan Lane.

Regardless, I would choose a Broadway star. Fantasia to me will always be American Idol, even if she can play Celie well. I would rather LaChanze be picked. It would be great to get more Broadway stars playing their original roles. I realize she's older for the part, but even still...

Oprah doesn't let things slip accidentally. If she let it out, it was for a reason. It will happen.

I hope Fantasia stars in the movie. She really connects to the audience and she puts 110% of her heart and soul into the role when she goes on. I sat front row and that girl had me in tears. Anika Noni Rose will probably get a role; maybe Nettie. No doubt she impressed people at the Oscars and Dreamgirls. Beyonce will not get cast as Celie. I can bet on that. She's too attractive and too skinny for the role. No matter how plain you make her look, Celie needs to be HOMELY and HUMBLE. For Shug Avery to come out and say she's ugly, it needs to come from some place the audience believes and Oprah knows that. Plus, I have a feeling Beyonce's next musical movie is going to be Aida.

Audra McDonald should be Shug Avery...

Anika Noni Rose's acting goes beyond anything Fantasia or LaChanze could do. Plus, she has already proven she can act on the screen EXTREMELY well which neither LaChanze nor Fantasia have done yet. She has got the voice, the talent, and this is the kind of breakthrough role that will get her the meaty roles she should be playing. I dislike THE COLOR PURPLE score, I find it bland and at a much lower level than the novel or film, but I'd kill to hear Anika Noni Rose's "I'm Here."

As great as LaChanze is, I wonder whether she would turn up for filming. Heaven knows, her track record for actually being on stage is pretty poor.

I can't believe there is any doubt about Fantasia being one of the prime choices for doing the role.

Oprah told her that she has never seen anything like her performance and that she was Celie. So, if Oprah is doing the movie, Fantasia is her Celie.

Fantasia got unanimous praise by the NY Critics for her portrayal of Celie, she brought in millions of dollars to a show that would have otherwise closed, and she had movie and broadway stars at her feet.

I guess not too many people here followed the aftermath of her performance.

I was there the night Jane Fonda went and she was shaking and crying through her performance.

I've seen both and let me say, I'd prefer Lachanze. Who will sell tickets? Fantasia.

When Oprah does this,and she will trust me, she'll start scrolling through the blackberry and this is who she'll pick.

Celie:Fantasia
Nettie:LaChanze (possibly)
Shug: Audra McDonald
Sophia: Jennifer Hudson
Harpo:Jamie Foxx or Will Smith (she LOVES them)
Mister-Denzel

Oprah isn't going to let this be some little straight to TV movie like her other work.

Ditto, quite frankly, the only reason there are talks of a movie musical is because of the great job and excellent reviews Fantasia has gotten in the role. Oprah was highly impressed by her performance and said it was like no other Celie she'd ever seen and she'd seen them all.

We all know who will be cast as Celie in the movie, no doubt, Fantasia. The world would have a fit.

Yeah, Lachanze is way too old for the movie version, she's pushing 46 y/o (although she looks really young). Fantasia's only 23.

First of all looks and weight have nothing to do with acting. Did you not see Charleze Theron (sp) in Monster? To me she's even more attractive and skinner then Beyonce yet she got pretty ugly for that movie. Beyonce wouldn't get it because it's not her's to get, not because she's pretty. Plus, no way she could handle a role as conplex as Celie.

I would love to see LaChanze play Celie in the movie. I dont think she's too old...hello Disney has 20 yr olds playing teeny boppers...I do think Fantasia would get it most likely though. I hope Anika gets Nettie, J Hud or Latifah (depending on how they want to play her) for Sofia, Withers for Shug, Jamie is going to play Mister, and ME as HARPO!!!

I'll have to agree that I hope they don't make a movie. The original was phenomenal and I don't think the original performances could ever be beat.

First you're another sloe-eyed vamp, then someone's mother, then you're camp...
