TDF/TKTS Questions..

Hello all... hypothetically if I were planning a trip to NYC that would be about 6 weeks, would you think it would be worth it to get TDF, if I really wanted to see as much theatre as possible? It's 30$ for a year's membership, and I feel like it would help me, from what i've read here TDF is an excellent service.

And on another note, is TDF available for non-Americans? If it's not - my issue is solved! Another question would be if TDF members are allowed to book 2 tickets, or only one? I have signed up for the OffOff free service, and it allows you to buy 2 or more, so obviously members can bring guests - has anyone tried this?

A final question would be if TKTS is really "worth it" - is rushing or trying the lottery for the show a better bet (in terms of getting a quality seat for your money)? TKTS doesn't seem to be the cheapest option which still gives you good seats, but maybe I'm wrong.

I don't know the answer about non-Americans...but not just "anyone" can join. You have to qualify. For example, I do as an educator. You'd have to look on the website to see if you fit one of the categories. Also, there is a membership that is those that are further from Manhattan (200 miles away, I think, maybe?)

Hard to say if its worth it, because its impossible to determine which shows will be offered when you will be here. But I find that if you only use it for 2 or 3 shows a year, it has more than paid for itself.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I'm Canadian and I joined with my union membership. You can book more than 1 ticket...try a dummy order for any show and you'll see. I used it on my last trip and took 1 friend to The Flick and 2 to Hand to God. The value is really up to you but it's nice to get discounted tix in advance and not worry about getting to a TKTS booth while you're there.

As far as TKTS vs Rush goes:

The first thing I always do is check what policy any show has, and then try to figure out what my odds are (i.e. how popular a show is among people who know about these things) and where the seats typically are. If that's all good I'm going with it because it's definitely the cheapest option.

If not, that leaves TKTS and discounts, and honestly if available discounts have become my preferred option. If they are 40% but you buy tickets at the BO without a fee you'll pay about as much as at TKTS with 50% and their $10 or whatever it is fee. Plus, you can choose your own seat and can choose a cheaper price category, while TKTS always gives you their best seats. If Cat 1 is available that usually means around $90, which is still quite a lot...

Dramamama, I am qualified as a student, but thank you for reminding me! Good to hear that it pays off with a few shows, and with the national membership (only 12$!) it definitely makes sense to invest in it. Thank you for replying.

That definitely sounds good - I will probably have a few shows I'd like to see but am also open to buying a ticket very close to curtain at Times Square - something like a play or something, which I'd probably be less fussy about!

Oh great! To sign up for the national membership you have to provide a postcode, and my current postcode is too long for the system, so maybe I'll have to contact them directly, but that's great to know! And thanks for confirming what I thought about the 2 or more tix.

Yea, I have mostly done TKTS close to curtain because there are hardly any line anymore then. Off-Broadway is also good at TKTS I think. They don't all have discounts but many are on the board. And many houses only have one price category anyway.
