Since we're all talking about how Joel has done the Phantom of the Opera (some of us love him right now, or are saying "what did he just make??"...Im on the love side :))..who do you think was the best director of musical theatre? Id have to say Hal Prince and Bob Fosse, just on the amount of hits they've had

I'd have to go with Bob Fosse, who molded acting, singing, and dance into one unique creature.

If is was making a musical movie today, I would have to go with Rob Marshall. Not only for his Chicago, but I really enjoyed his Annie as well. I think he's the only one I would trust.

I think, if given the chance, Baz luhrman could become an AMAZING director of musicals. Strictly ballroom and Moulin Rouge show he has a great eye for how to stage musical numbers for film and make them very cinematic. I would love for him to do another musical and see how it turns out.

You are very right, MTT, there are others that are wonderful as well.

But I just listed the five that I put in a category above others. A real excellence.

Champion and Layton and Da Costa and Hart and Kaufman and countless others are no doubt extemely important and I love their work and cherish it, yet those five REALLY pioneered and changed the face of the musical theatre with their production forever.
