This song was better than the joker song previously posted. Both songs seem to be longer than they need to be. I think with a really great orchestrater, the songs could work. Maybe the lyrics need some tweaking, because some of the inflections don't seem to fit the beat. This seems like a good concept, and the explanation of what is happening during this sequence makes it sound like a good concept. Especially the joker song, there is too much repitition. songs, even opening numbers, need a build, which this one is lacking, but probably due to the lack of orchestration. Also, every time whoever is singing sings "shift" I cringe, because they do not sing that word well, but that is criticizing the performer, not the song. Get a really talented singer to sing it, and a great orchestrater to orchestrate it, maybe with lots of cello and some keyboard work like CATS and I would probably like it.

I afraid I'm going to have to provide a less detailed review: it sucks. Rockfenris, I appreciate your enthusiasm about this project, but really, both of these songs have been dreadful, apart from the fact that they have little in common with the Batman genre.
No matter what any Batman musical ( no matter how good) would be ripped by critics as subject matter not worthy of Broadway
That's true, but at least with a better composer the critics could say "it did have one or two okay songs". These would certainly not be those...
Yech.
Like it or not, it needs no more explanation than that.
it would be nice to see some of the lyrics posted in the thread for more informed references. Listening to lyrics might not be possible for all BWWers.
As to source for musicalization, what makes Batman any less interesting/appropriate than Annie Warbucks, Lil Abner, or Superman?
ANYTHING can be musicalized. You just have to find a way to do it successfully. Based on these songs though, it doesn't look like Jim Steinman was able to do it with Batman.
I am a huge fan of Steinman's and I'll have to be honest that the songs that I have heard are pretty good but not the best. I still enjoy them but like LuPonatic said they would be even better if they were fully orchestrated and had top notch performers singing them. It is a rare thing to hear Steinman sing his own music so that is kind of cool. I also agree with LuPonatic that these are a bit long (maybe not so many verses and repitition). But we have to remember that these are JUST demos and that these songs would not be the exact same thing you would hear if they ever got an actual finalized and rehearsed production. Being a huge Burton fan myself I love the idea of a musical based on the two best Batman movies (in my opinion); however, I'm just not sure if Broadway is ready for it. After the past 3 unsucessful musicals based around bats and/or vampires I can't blame Warner Bros. for pulling the plug on it. Who knows maybe in the distant future they could try again but for now I think it is best that it is not done. Being a fan of his music I think maybe what he could do is release a concept album with ALL the music he has written and wants to write for it and pacakage it with possibly some sketches or descriptions of what Burton and Steinman (or just Steinman)were envisioning. I know I read somewhere that Meatloaf is singing one of the Batman intended songs on his album aswell as possibly The Dream Engine's first CD. Maybe he could have The Dream Engine perform the music for the concept CD. Its's just an idea, who knows! Just wanted to put my two cents in!
Edit: I wanted to just also mention how incredible that piano intrumental part at about 10mins and 20secs into the Graveyard Shift song is. WOW!!!

The Joker's song was better.
Much, much better. This one is slow and mucky and just gah.

Could someone like post a ysi or megaupload or really any other link to this song? I can't access it on the page mentioned in the first post, my comp won't play it.
I really like this, it's a lot better than the Wonderful Toys song.
