Saw the show tonight and loved it! It really is in great shape.
Sierra Boggess is so so great! Her voice is pure gold! The way she plays Ariel is so on and just perfect! Her costume looks great on stage. The skirt thing did not bother me at all.
Sherie Rene Scott is fantastic. I loved the way she plays Ursula. It was almost not as evil as the movie. You almost liked her. She has great one liners. Her costumes look amazing on stage. And her voice just fills the theatre. I did not enjoy the way she dies. Very Weak. It was funny, you knew she was about to die because you can totally see her looking through the stage fog for the trap door in the floor. I wanted it to be bigger and more dramatic! She kinda just goes into the floor with a bunch of white smoke. ehh blah!
Eddie Korbich is great as Scuttle. I was surprised the lack of facial make-up used in the show overall, but especially on Scuttle. He had none on. Looked like a man in a crazy outfit wearing a hat with a beak on it. But he was great none the less.
Tyler Maynard & Derrick Baskin (Flotsam and Jetsom) They were O.K. I wish they were a little more creepy and evil. They were just kinda flat. Plus, totally saw Tyler smoking outside the stage door before the show. Made my heart hurt. I know some Broadway actors smoke, but it still makes you think "That has got to damage their voice to some degree!"
(Flounder) J.J. Singleton- He was cute. Not great. Very forgettable. Watch out this kid is about to have his voice change. He was cracking a little.
Sean Palmer (Prince Eric) Nice voice. Played the Role. That's it.
John Treacy Egan ( Chef Louis) STAND OUT! He was fantastic! Very Very Funny!
Tituss Burgess (Sebastian) Brilliant! LOVED him. One of the best parts of the show. His voice is flawless and he is plays Sebastian great! His costume did not bother me at all. I actually liked it. Again, no facial make-up! I didn't understand it. If they can make Elphaba green, why not Sebastian red?
Norm Lewis (King Triton) I was so upset with his role and performance. Very weak and boring. Singing wasn't there. Acting was flat. Oh well.
Set- I think it works great. Visually it is stunning at times. "Kiss the Girl" and "Under the Sea" are highlights. Very colorful. They even have these two huge structures that work almost like amusement park rides. Like a horizontal ferris wheel. They move around the stage in circle and carry cast members dressed like butterflies and birds. Very neat!
Costumes- They look great on stage. Everyones! Even Flounder's. Like I said before, I would just like more facial make up on some of the cast. I don't know if I enjoy the "roller shoes". It looks neat at times. At other times, it looks goofy.
Music- The songs from the movie are done great. The New songs are ok. The stand out new songs would be "I Want the Good Times Back", "She's in Love", and "Beyond My Wildest Dreams".
ok there is my "review" lol
Go see it! Its great. I actually enjoyed it BETTER than Mary Poppins.
oh yeah...Ariel's final transformation into human is sooooooo lame. We'll leave it at that!

I saw the show tonight. Great Score, a few great performances, everything else was rather blah though. It's really a shame too.
has anyone stagedoored it yeta? i can picture it being a mad house.
What about Jonathan Freeman?
"She kinda just goes into the floor with a bunch of white smoke."
underwater smoke?? That's interesting.
Lauren,
Agree with just about EVERYTHING that you said !! (except for Flounder's costume..OY !!!)
Agree.. they need to change the "transformation" scene !
But, I loved it as well, and in great shape for early previews !
Tituss, Sherie, and Sierra are SOOOO good !!

I stage doored it last night, and it was crazy. I bought a window card, so I wanted everyone to sign it-and they did.
Most people were taking pictures if you asked them to, except Sherie. She said it was too cold, blah!
Oh well, it was a madhouse, but we were right against the barricade thingy.
artscallion...If I remember correctly from the Denver run, Ursula doesn't die underwater in the show.

I would think the song "if only" would be a stand out.

@gypsy
Well, for a lot of people it was. Obviously, everyone has a different opinion. Some people liked different songs, actors, costumes etc. than others did.
Lauren, interesting how our opinions differ so much. Although I do agree wit you on some things. I thought Tyler and Derrick were great, although Tyler shined over Derrick. I enjoyed the make up used on the ensemble and eels, but was also baffled by the lack of make up on all the animals in the show. Even Flounder's makeup was minimal.
Chef Louie was good, but nothing special to me. I found his song to be boring and too operatic, although he sang it well. and I loved Sean Palmer. I thought he made Prince Eric very human.
I don't think anyone could find Tituss Burgess anything but fantastic. The audience reaction to him at hte first preview was ridiculous. His songs got the biggest applause of the night.
I adored Norm Lewis. I thought he had the stage presence, power and abs that Triton requires, although he was underused. I loved the poignant moment when he sings the reprise at the end to Ariel.
I didn't like the scenery, although some of it was well done. Found the amusement park like structure to be weird and a lot of the costumes were unimpressive. I love how no one mentions the dancing because there was none...
And...stage door is a madness and not organized at all. I also don't understand why sherie comes out since she basically plowed her wya through the crowd and refused to take pictures when I saw her.
I am SOOOOOOOO excited that Tituss is killing it! Besides the fact that he has amazing voice and acting skills, he is an Amazing person and deserves nothing but the best!!!
Thanks for the review, Lauren!! I'm going to see it next Wednesday...Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie...I'll update this next week!!
Aww... I'm kinda upset that Sherie doesn't stop... She's one of the main reasons I'm going... well that and that I've been waiting to see this since it was first talked about YEARS ago...

Where's Emcee when I need you!
"Horizontal Ferris Wheel".......ummmm a Carousel?
So why is Ariel's transformation lame? Is it true that another mermaid just rips her tail off?

Yeah, it's true...and so disappointing!

Someone just rips off her tail? That is disappointing. Of course, I was sure that they were going to rip off their own transformation effect from BatB for the ending.
Boy, how I wish that would have copied that ending from "BATB" !!! Her transformation is handled better at the "Legend of the Little Mermaid" at Disney World !
Hey, ya never know... they still have time- Maybe they will read the boards and change it :))
Still, the show is VERY good !!! Cant wait to go back !
Just a question..how is Ursula's death done?
Yes, the show is in great shape. There have been quite a few changes since the Denver run, mostly at the ending. It was beautiful.
It's nothing like a carousel. Perhaps a horizontal ferris wheel was the wrong type of wording. It's more like...the Dumbo ride at Disney :-P
And Ursula basically sinks into the floor in a big pile of smoke...not very impressive.
I'm just teasing caryme...it just struck me as funny seeing "horizontal ferris wheel"...cause immediately, i pictured a carousel..
Chances are I probably wont see Mermaid for a good while..at least till after the first of the year..
So for now, I'll just enjoy poking fun at others' reviews hehehe.
