The Lunchbox is a new musical based on a 2013 film, set in Mumbai, about a relationship that develops between a young wife and an older widower when a lunchbox - meant for her husband - is accidently delivered to the widower. Rachel Chavkin is directing the musical, and the film's director, Ritesh Batra, wrote the book and co-wrote the lyrics with two brothers, the Lazours, who wrote the music. The stars are Manu Narayan, who has appeared on Broadway in the revivals of Company and My Fair Lady, and Kuhoo Verma, who was most recently off-Broadway as Veronica Sawyer in Heathers: The Musical and who I saw in Octet at the Berkeley Rep.

The first preview is Sunday night and is sold out and the opening is May 27. I'm seeing it at the end of the month and plan on going in cold - as I like to do for out-of-town tryouts. I haven't seen the film and don't know much about the show aside from the tidbit that the choreographer, Reshma Gajjar, is a San Francisco Bay Area native who is making her debut as a choreographer and is probably best known as the first dancer who opens La La Land (the scene on the LA freeway). The show is scheduled to run through June 28 at the Berkeley Rep.

Chavkin is working with a number of folks she has worked with before. Bradley King is doing the lighting design, Mimi Lien is handling the scenic design, et cetera.

So jealous of everyone who gets to see this. Kuhoo Verma in a Lazours musical is like something my brain would come up with as I'm lying on my death bed and serotonin is flooding my brain one last time before I go.
