Posted: 10/2/05 at 5:43amLooking at the movies already released and what is to be released in the next couple of months, it does appear 2005 is going to be another weak year in Cinema, so anything is possible.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 6:52amWell, the Oscars is not only how great a film is, but how well the studio pushes it to Oscar voters. Keeping in mind the DREADFUL promotion job that this studio does for marketing the film to the public, I am very afraid of its chances at the Oscars !

No matter how good it turns out to be, I'd be shocked if it got a Best Picture nomination. There are too many big, serious "important" films coming out.
Unless they consider it a sort of Lifetime Achievement award for Mel Brooks, who did lose his wife this year, after all...

Not a very glowing review:

Posted: 10/2/05 at 12:36pmCapote is the strong contender this year. It has received GLOWING reviews. That's going to be the film to beat. REnt and The Producers don't have a chance now.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 1:35pmEven if it turns out absolutely great, I highly, highly doubt The Producers will get anything except minor nominations. It's a comedy, and an old-fashioned musical comedy at that. And that's fine- the Oscars aren't any kind of measure of merit in anything outside their beloved Very Serious Dramas.

"Nathan is the best shot at a high-profile nomination."
And he won't win. As of now, Philip Seymour Hoffman has a lock. I think this year's Oscars will be a contest between Capote and Good Nght, and Good Luck.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 4:47pm"Capote" is remarkable. Probably won't win Best Picture (it feels a bit too "small" for that) but Hoffman will be nominated for and may win Best Actor.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 4:53pmAfter seeing History of Violence last night, I'd be surprised if anyone can beat William Hurt for supporting actor -- it's a small role, but he's incredible in it. I only bring it up because I think the Producers would have several contenders for that award.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 5:03pmAs much as I love "The Producers" and I would absolutely adore seeing it succeed, I just don't think that the strength of the movie is there, yet. The direction and cinematography, normally a shoo-in for musicals just doesn't seem to be very relevant in The Producers (from what I've heard). I highly doubt Mr. Lane will be receiving a nomination, I think therei s a much stronger chance for the Best Supporting Actor category and even that is a bit of a stretch.

Right now, I think the only movie that is a sure-fire candidate for an Oscar nomination, is Walk the Line.
By almost all accounts, it's got a crowd-pleasing storyline, great performances and is just the type of film that AMPAS likes to recognize.
As for other films and their Oscar potential, it's too soon to know.

Posted: 10/2/05 at 5:17pmI dont even think WALK THE LINE is a shoo in for a Best Picture nod. The films most people have short listed are Sam Mendes' JARHEAD and Spielberg's MUNICH. But nobody knows too much of anything at this point.
