Last night in preparing music for tonight's Halloween bash I was listening to the Rocky Horror Picture Show "Sing It" Album - the one minus the lead vocals and was really quite impressed with Richard Hartley's musical arrangements for the film. They are really excellent....especially "Science Fiction Double Feature" with those sweeping strings.

The movie soundtrack is a thing of beauty. Doing "Science Fiction, Double Feature" as a T. Rex song instead of the peppy girl-group sound it had had onstage was an unexpected stroke of genius.

Yes, that was genius - - - I also love the string section on "Dammit Janet". The really rock numbers: "Hot Patootie", "Wild and Untamed Thing", etc. really "cook". There is some major jamming going on with those musicians. Legend has it two members of Procol Harum were recruited for the recording sessions.
It really is a thing of beauty.

The keyboards on the album are by John Rabbit Bundrick, keyboardist for The Who.

Oh thanks for that info...I did not know that and have always wondered who it was because he's credited simply as "Rabbit" in the film and on the soundtrack.

Rabbit was his stage name, and he didn't go by John Rabbit Bundrick professionally until maybe the early Eighties.
I like to imagine an alternative version of the movie, where Mike Garson was pianist instead. Would it have been as good? I'm not sure, but it certainly would have been even more idiosyncratic.

I'm still baffled as to why there hasn't been a Broadway revival of this in 15 years. I think we're long overdue.

True, but because the film eventually over-shadowed the original stage show and it's original Broadway run flopped back in 1975, it took about 26 years for the show to even be considered for revival.
It's a fun show. I would love to see it return to the Main Stem.
Hopefully we will get one sooner than later.
