I haven’t seen this TV production yet (that’s what happens when you live in Portugal) but this new recording of the famous score by Rodgers & Hammerstein can’t be compared with the fantastic movie soundtrack starring Julie Andrews, but even so it’s a nice way for the new generations to discover it and maybe it’ll get them interested in other musicals. The fact is this SOUND OF MUSIC sounds better than I expected!

Well, there are some of us who prefer the original cast recording with Mary Martin because it has more warmth and sincerity.

Posted: 12/8/13 at 5:36amI wish I had seen Mary Martin doing this musical and I enjoy her in the Original Broadway Cast recording, but I grow up watching Julie Andrews as Maria, so for me she'll always be Maria.

Posted: 12/8/13 at 5:10pmThere is a bootleg audio out there of the original Sound of Music show with the first cast ever. After listening to it multiple times, I can see why the show won Best Musical and why Mary Martin won Best Leading Actress. Even without seeing her performance, just hearing the audience gravitate towards her performance as Maria was just amazing.

Posted: 12/9/13 at 11:01amSomeone was very nice to gift me the Wal-Mart exclusive edition of the soundtrack. The second disc includes "sing-a-long" versions of some of the more popular numbers. I listened to that first because I just loved the orchestrations. This version used a mixture of the original orchestrations by Robert Russell Bennett, the film orchestrations by Irwin Kostal and the revised orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin. If anyone has the opportunity get the 2-Disc Wal-Mart exclusive.
