The more I think about it the more I think Darcie is SO right for this role.
Besides, let's show a little love for her and for this great show.

I was the Debbie Reynold/Harve Presnell revival. Sadly, it was an embarassment. I remember Reynaolds curtain speech where she essentially thanked the audience for coming to see the show and not leaving during intermission.
The show would take MAJOR reworking. Don't know it would be worth the effort.

I was also thinking Sutton Foster could work for this. Given the weaknesses of the book for this era, it might need a name to get going rather than a relative unknown like Darcie.
Sutton could fit that bill.

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:15pmDarcie Roberts is simply one of the most talented, and underused performers around.

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:18pmI agree BobbyBubby. As far as a name draw, do you think it is important for a show like this one? Everybody has at least seen the movie right or am I off in my own little musical theatre world?

Well, as we learned last season: Names don't always sell tickets.
Hey what about Toni Collette?
#33re: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN
Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:24pmWell, I don't mean a name like Madonna or Britney Spears but a good Broadway name like Sutton Foster or Indiana Mentzelbaum (kidding) couldn't hurt, no?

Couldn't hurt, but I think a good review in the Times is better than having a star in your show. Critics are more well, critical of HOllywood types, and having them there can actually hurt your show instead of help it.
And I never get the idea that Foster and Menzel sell a large amount of tickets. I'm sure their fans go in the first month, and few after that even know who they are.

Yeah, you're probably right BB.
Perhaps I am letting my devotion to Sutton cloud my judgment. I wouldn't call myself a fan boy - but I'd pay to see her sing listings from the phone book.

Toni Collette is inspired casting! She actually kinda reminds me of Tammy Grimes.

I know what you mean Patronus.
I pretend all the time that Carolee Carmello sells tickets.
Hey, what about Carolee as Molly?

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:50pmBobbyBubby, don't hate me but I have a hard time seeing Carolee rolling around in the dirt fighting off all her brothers. Can you really see her a a country bumpkin?
#40re: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN

Yes I can!
I think Carolee is a great comic and could pull it off. She would also make the transition from Bumpkin to society girl with great ease.

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:55pmTrue dat, true dat but her vocal skills would be wasted on this show. I'm gonna go hide in a corner while you throw things at me! Hahaha

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:56pmDoes anyone think that Sara Gettelfinger from DRS might be a good choice for Molly? She's young, pretty and so damned talented.
#44re: THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN
Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:56pmYou're right though Wonderboy. Carolee's voice would be wasted on the role.

1 of my dear friends was in the Bway show & did the Bway Tour. I have several souvenir playbills of some of the Bway last Golden Age shows like MOLLY, RED HEAD, FUNNY GIRL & CLEAR DAY w/the entire cast's autographs fr Bway & the Tour. Some of my prized possessions.
I agree that it would be great for MOLLY BROWN to be done w/a performer that would shake up Bway 'cause that's the kind'a gal Molly was!

Posted: 9/6/05 at 5:45pmNobody's vocal skills would be 'wasted" on MOLLY BROWN. It's a much rangier role than you think--it goes higher than is comfortable for most women. (Tammy Grimes speak-sang some of the more difficult patches). She also needs to modulate and go soft in a low range for "My Own Brass Bed" and "Dolce E Niente."

People around the U.S. have heard of this show, whether or not they've actually seen it. I love some of these inspired casting choices (Toni Collette being my favorite)! If the book needs major re-working, so be it! There are some great book writers out there who could rise to this occasion.
With the success of the movie "Titanic" behind us, Molly is definitely worth re-visiting.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 12:12amI think one of the problems of the show is that you pretty much know everything about Molly's character within the first twenty minutes. She doesn't really develop... she is pretty much the same at the beginning as she is at the end.
