TKTS

I know I'll get grumblings on this but I went to TKTS today to buy 2 tickets to Significant Other. First, there were 4 women with a brochure at the Play Only Window deciding what to choose while the rest of us stood there in the rain. This was after nobody could tell me where to enter for the end of the line. I finally said something that it wasn't fair that we were standing there while the 4 ladies debated on what to see. They did move. Then I got to the window and asked for my show selection to which the seller said, "are we selling that today?" I told her yes it was up on the boards. She left her post and came back saying it was up. I gave her my card and she then left her post again. Sh came back with the tickets and said "$105.and change". I said that's 50% off? She said yes. It was near curtain time now and raining and I was meeting someone so I left.

The Roundabout site says all tickets for this show are $79. My math says 50% of $79 is $39.50 a ticket. 2 tickets would be $79. So their handling fees, service fees, etc. would be more than $20? I know they charge service fees, I've used them before, but I can't compute this total. I will try to call them tomorrow but I know it's impossible to reach anyone there. You have to e-mail everything.

I know TKTS is a wonderful institution and the money you pay for your ticket doesn't just go to the show, it goes to help other organizations and that's great-but today it seemed really high. It used to be a great way to get cheaper tickets and I guess it still is if it is your only discount outlet but with the ticket prices as high as they are now, it's doesn't feel like much of a bargain now.

That said-the seats were good and I loved the play for my 2nd time! They had a talk-back which was interesting-nice to see the actors talk about the show. The director was there too.

Might they have been premium seats?

It sounds like the discount was 40%, not 50%. If you actually saw it listed on the board at 50%, it might have changed from 50% to 40% while you were on line due to decreasing ticket availability. The woman wasn't even sure they were selling it so she probably was mistaken about the discount being 50%. At 40% off of $79 and adding the usual $5.50 per ticket fee, the total would be $105.80. (It might also have been $105.40, not $105.80, if they took 40% off of $77 and then added back in the $2 facility fee which is included in the $79 price and is never discounted and then added a $4.50 service fee which is $1 less than Broadway shows because they don't charge the $1 Broadway league fee). They don't make stuff up there, the amount you are paying is indicated on the ticket.

And yes, for the people on this board who could tell you who did the set design for each show and the last 3 credits for each swing, people using tkts who see very few shows, have questions and take too long is frustrating. But it's just part of what you have to accept when you use tkts.

Thx Fisherman for doing all that calculating. That makes sense. I could have sworn the board still said 50% but maybe it was in the process of changing to 40%-it was near curtain.

And you're right, I have little patience with tourists. I should realize they don't eat and breathe theatre like I do.

You've calm me down!
