Magruder, those are some pretty good guesses, I am holding off on placing a few till I see them...here are mine, so far...
MUSICAL
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
25th Annual Puttnum County Spelling Bee
Spamalot
*Leaving the last slot open till I see Chitty &
REVIVAL
La Cage Aux Folles
Pacific Overatures
Sweet Charity
PLAY
Doubt
The Pillowman
(and now that Democracy is closing as well, I would have normally said DEMOCRACY & GEM OF THE OCEAN...seeing as how 3 of the 5 new plays will be closed come Tony time, Im thinking BROOKLYN BOY MAY sneak in and give one of the other 2 the shaft, considering GEM wasnt even considered for the Pulitzer.)
REVIVAL of a PLAY
Who's Afraid of Virgina Woolf?
Twelve Angry Men
Glengary Glen Ross
(I havent seen STREETCAR yet, so I'll hold off on this last one. *Not that Ive seen GGR either, but I just have a feeling. Streetcar, if recieved well could get in...but I think Sight Unseen & Reckless were both better productions than the likes of Glass Menagerie, On Golden Pond, Steel Magnolias, & Julius Ceazar. Who knows, leavin this last slot blank.)

The nominees are easy -- predicting the winners could be a little more up in the air --
SPAMALOT vs. SCOUNDRELS
DOUBT vs. PILLOWMAN
I think WOOLF and CHARITY will take revivals -- but nothing is a sure bet there either.

How much would I LOVE IT if Brooklyn took that last slot. Not because of my undying LOVE for it, but because I just dont think LITP deserves it. Wouldn't a lot of people have to eat some crow who have been screaming for B'KLYN to close long ago. Although I think Little Women or Chitty will take the final slot.
As for revival - Chrarity has to be 100% steller to trump LA CAGE imho. It has three things going against it. 1) the entire Christina debacle 2)It opens on the LAST day of Tony nominations - to trump a show that has been running since Dec. it has to be DAMN GOOD! 3) It needs to change 50% of what was happening out of town that gave it those lackluster reviews.

12 angry men is going to take revival of a play without question. (Unless Streetcar gets amazing reviews)
Otherwise everyone pretty much has what I think
except best new musical
that is a tough choice
Spamalot vs. Dirty Rotten vs. Spelling Bee
while Spamalot got rave reviews a lot of the reviewers compared it more with Mamma Mia then they did with producers. Dirty Rotten got mixed to raves while Spelling Bee off broadway got raves. From that I'm leaning towards Spelling Bee squeeking this one out. But that is very debatable.

I think Twelve Angry Men stands a good shot at Revival of a Play, but I wouldn't say it's going to win "without question". Virginia Woolf, which opened to mostly raves, could take it just as easily.

Posted: 4/5/05 at 2:06pmThat is true I forgot about Wolfe. And wolfe has something else going for it. The fact that 12 Angry men will be closed come tony time. It has to vacate the theatre at the beginning of May to give room for Roundabout's next show. They are looking for an open theatre to transfer it to but if they do not get a commercial transfer and the show has to close that will hurt it's chances.

Posted: 4/5/05 at 2:14pmI don't think Twelve Angry Men will be hurt by the fact that it's not going to be running for those last three weeks before the Tony Awards. In fact, because it HAS been running for so long, most of the Tony voters probably have seen it, which will be its advantage over Streetcar and Glengarry, and maybe even Virginia Woolf, to some degree. Last year, a closed revival, Lincoln Center's Henry IV, beat both Raisin in the Sun and Jumpers, which were running at Tony time.

While I havent seen VW yet, and although I think 12 was a good play, the momentum for it has slowed considerably. Unless Streetcar is the next IT thing, I'd look for VW to win it. Although 12 COULD.

BEST MUSICAL
Spamalot
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Light in the Piazza
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
DRS could sneak past SPAMALOT, but I would say that smart money is on the latter.
BEST PLAY
Doubt
The Pillowman
Democracy
Gem of the Ocean
Since DOUBT won the Pulitzer, it is the front-runner. THE PILLOWMAN could sneak past, though, if it gets the kind of reviews that I think it will. Then again, in the past 20 years, only a handful of Pulitzer winners have gone on to win the Tony.
BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL
Pacific Overtures
La Cage Aux Folles
Sweet Charity
I'm pulling for PACIFIC OVERTURES, but LA CAGE, which will be fresh in the minds of voters, will probably take it.
BEST PLAY REVIVAL
12 Angry Men
A Streetcar Named Desire
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Glengarry Glen Ross
It's neck-in-neck between 12 ANGRY MEN and VIRGINIA WOOLF.

Toward Melissa Errico Fan's post, for the past 10 years of the Tony Awards, only in 2000 did a worthy British play (Copenhagen) topple its main American competitor (Dirty Blonde) for the Best Play Tony.
In years with British and American plays in contention for the Best Play Tony Award:
1995 - Love! Valour! Compassion! won over Arcadia and Indiscretions.
1996 - Master Class won over Racing Demon
1997 - The Last Night of Ballyhoo won over Skylight and Stanley
1998 - Not an American winner, but the more commercial Art won over The Beauty Queen of Leenane
1999 - Side Man won over Closer and The Lonesome West
2001 - Proof won over The Invention of Love
2003 - Take Me Out won over Vincent in Brixton
2004 - I Am My Own Wife won over Frozen
