Posted: 11/8/13 at 11:57pmSome good actors in an absolute snoozefest of a play in a dumpy room of NY City Center...hated stage 2. Out of about 300 shows, this is the 3rd time ever leaving a play during intermission. People were fidgeting, sleeping, walking out mid play. Terrible.

The venue feels like it should be set up for readings of plays. Not actual plays.

Posted: 11/9/13 at 12:29amIs it as bad as the Roundabout Underground? I will never see another play there. It feels way too claustrophobic.

Posted: 11/9/13 at 12:58amI've had fantastic experiences in both MTC II (Humor Abuse, Loman Family Picnic, Beggars in the House of Plenty to name a few) and Roundabout Underground (Bad Jews, Speech & Debate, Tigers be Still, Dream of the Burning Boy). I love the intimacy. And good directors have even been able to make interesting stage pictures in such close quarters. Different strokes.

I really loved this show, and several people (including me) gave it a standing ovation. It's about a woman accused of killing her two infant children. How does it affect her relationship with her husband and with her mom who is running for an elected office? The mom (Margaret Colin) is particularly great - I love the scenes with her daughter and the scenes where she is running for office and who she speaks with along the way. We find out what happens to her election bid. And we find out what happens between the daughter and the husband. And a surprising ending for what's next with the daughter.
The psychiatrist is played by Reed Birney; he has been in so many off-Broadway shows recently and is truly an exceptional actor. We see how he says he's found a disease that certain people are afflicted by, and we see his anger and rage when he has to answer some tough questions in Act II. And we see the hurt and pain that the daughter is going through ; one scene towards the end of Act I reminded me of the movie "The Exorcist." A very gripping play with a mix of raw and volatile emotions, and a real winner for Manhattan Theater Club.
