Wow, defyinggravity2, you're a veritable tabula rasa, aintchya?
I'm gonna be perfectly honest, as is my trademark on these boards.
Taye Diggs is not a star. He certainly deserves to be but he is not. Idina Menzel is not a star. She certainly deserves to be but is not. A star couple is the pairing of Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. The kind of coupling that has people lining to streets to buy tickets that sell out a 4 month run. To think that the producers of Wicked would put Diggs in hoping for that kind of reaction is ludicrous and hardly any sort of an argument. I have to agree with whomever suggested it was done as a favor. Idina I wouldn't doubt, suggested her husband.
The show is an advanced sales hit so far and its not like they needed a semi-star to lift it. The Producers (musical) need two stars to stay afloat.
Give Diggs time, all actors must grow into their characters. I actually feel bad that he was so badly rushed into this.
As for those fabricated offstage quotes, Wicked must have the most unfaithful, disloyal sort of ensemble on Broadway because there is an unwritten code that was violated. Now I don't think that is the case which is why those quotes are fabricated.
I'm right. I'm a Republican

Yeah, especially in bed, LOL! Now, retract the claws "Namo" and let's stop all the hatin'. It's Christmas and if "Wicked" taught us anything it's that Christmas is a time of forgiveness and joy and goodwill--wait, that was that really bad claymation "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" special I was watching that gave me my philosophy for living. Aw heck! Too much egg nog I guess. Squash all dat!
At any rate, Merry Christmas to Kris Cusick and Taye Diggs and Mr. Butz and to everyone here on this forum.
BTW "Namo", that's a cute flight suit ya got there
Well, at least someone else understands what a *star* and a *star couple* is and isn't. It's most certainly not a few people who've been in a few B'way shows. Middle America does not know who the heck the leads of this show are.

You raise an interesting point Al Dente. There is a difference between a star or star couple known by Middle America and a star or star couple known by theater going audiences in NYC. Just because Donna Murphy or Marian Seldes/Brian Murray might not be known to someone who goes to the theater once a year in Kansas does not mean these people aren't stars to someone from Kansas who follows theater and flies in to see theater once or twice a year in NYC or aren't stars to people who live in the city. People who live in the city must see the ads all over the place with Donna Murphy's name on them. I would imagine if they went to the show and saw that she was out they be upset and might want a refund. When I was in NYC two weeks ago, she missed the 4 weekend performances and there was a line half way down the block at each performance for refunds/exchanges. Those people obviously think she's a "star". The producers must as well since the revival was done for Murphy. And the producers of BECKETT/ALBEE must think Seldes and Murray are draws as well. They certainly kept THE PLAY ABOUT THE BABY running for the better part of a year. I don't argue that Murphy, Seldes, Murray, Chenoweth and Menzel are not stars like Jackman, Lane, Broderick and Peters but that doesn't mean they aren't stars in their own right and don't have some effect on the box office.
whatever happened to luluhed?

As I despised RENT, neither half of the dynamic stellar couple ever registered in my telescope.
So there are even some folks in the middle of little ole Manhattan who don't know, or care, who this pair is, nor whether they dance together on stage or off.
The entire idea of sounds like one from the mind of a 1/2-witted publicist.
Bulldog.
DefyingGravity2 had a good point... Fiyero, and whoever plays him, is definitly not the role that has the ability to "ruin" or "make" the show. It's all about Elphaba and it will be interesting to see who, after all the speculation on this board, will be choosen to fill Idina's shoes. Luckily, we have A LOT of time till we will be dealing with that! Until then, let's just enjoy the new wonderful addition to the canon of Broadway musicals that is Wicked!
