Tea, anyone?

For those of you who sing here, I'd be interested in knowing what kind of tea you drink for your voice. And if you don't drink tea, what are some of your mainstay every day practices to keep your voice in top shape? No dairy!!?? No soda!!??
Thanks,
-John

Ginger tea. Some people say Throat Coat, but i hate the stuff. It numbs my chords.
Drink more water than you ever have before so you're properly "wet."
Sing every single day.

NO COLD WATER! It must always be room temperature water. Cold water makes your vocal chords tense while room temperature water will moisten and expand them while keeping you hydrated.
And, this goes without saying...NEVER TAKE ANY CHLORASEPTIC! It numbs your vocal chords which is one of the worst things you could do to yourself. Sure, you won't feel the pain...but it harms your chords and you won't have proper control over them.
As for tea...I always stick with green tea.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:02pmi personally dont drink tea...i have never liked the taste of it. i usually drink lots of water while practicing and before an audition. i was also told to have a soda about 30 mins beofre an audition to properly coat your chords. it has worked for me for years, just make sure you dont burp while singing. :)

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:02pmI like green ginger tea.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:08pmI've always enjoyed Tazo tea, any variety. Very soothing.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:08pmI've been on an 8 month soda hiatus and my voice has been VERY good..a lot better than how it was when I drank soda..I also use Throat Coat when my voice hurts.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:09pmi dont like tea either except for that fruit tea stuff, I can handle that. I usually gargle warm salt water and gargle apple cider vinegar with honey and lemon juice. It's gross but it really does the trick.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:13pmIsn't acidity (lemon) bad? There are so many rules that some people follow: no dairy, fried food, acid and the list goes onnnnnnn.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:13pmYea MEF, the tea I drink is the Tazo Green Ginger.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:14pmyeah you don't wanna put too much lemon juice in it, its in there to hide the horrible taste of apple cider vinegar. but a little is ok.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:34pmWhen I'm doing a lot of auditioning - or before a show, I'll drink a lot of Throat Coat - I've grown to love the taste of it and even if its only psychological, it makes me feel better and therefore sing better.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:38pmI drink a lot of Green Tea as a general rule; I find I get sick much less as a result...

Posted: 3/22/05 at 4:42pmMichael - thanks for the reminder - I used to have a cup of green tea every day at work - and it does cut down on the amount of time you're likely to spend sick in a year. I should get back in that habit.

I forgot about one trick I use, but it won't be everyone's "cup of tea" har har.
It's called a Neti Pot, and it's an Ayurvedic way to cleanse your sinuses. Opera singers often swear by this contraption, and as disgusting as it is, it's amazing how clean my nasal passages (and therefore chords) become.
LOL the picture is hilarious but it works!

Throat Coat when I'm sick.
Otherwise straight up Lipton tea with honey or lemon juice.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 5:23pmIrish tea...kinda got addicted over in Ireland and it reminds me of the trip so I am more confident.

Posted: 3/22/05 at 5:26pmI have a problem in that I get sick right before I perform in a musical. I know it's psychological. Anyone else have that problem?

Posted: 3/22/05 at 10:55pmThat reminds me...I need to get some Throat Coat. Has anyone ever done a shot of olive oil before singing? I know it sounds gross, but I've run across several *amazing* actors that do this. I had to go into callbacks for Beauty and the Beast two weeks ago after being down with the flu for 3 days. I did my olive oil shot (really nasty), but it worked. Tres temporary, but worked to get me through my 19 bars of HUMAN AGAIN! I was cast...so they must've liked what they heard, even though it was all coated in extra-virgin. Ha.

Drink Lemon Chamomile herbal tea, which is naturally caffeine fre, and I like to drink it in the mornings about an hour or so before I start vocal exercises.
And of course, lots and lots of water....
I avoid a lot of alcohol and stay away from caffeine as much as possible.

I cannot abide Throat Coat. Tastes like hot liquid cardboard. I don't like tea in general. I'm a coffee girl, unfortunately.
I can't give up my diet Coke! I do drink a lot of water when I'm in rehearsal or auditioning.
