Telecasting Musicals - Trend?
#1Telecasting Musicals - Trend?
Posted: 2/18/08 at 6:49pmOkay, what do you think of telecasting musicals? I loved the telcasts of "The Light in the Piazza" and "Legally Blonde", and I can't wait to see "Company"! It benefits me and other people who don't live exactly near New York and can't see every show on Broadway, but how does it benefit the shows? Many people just watch the telecast and record it, and don't think about actually going to see the show. I know that they normally telecast a show when it closes or if it's new, but how does it help?

Posted: 2/18/08 at 6:51pmI would love for this to become more common place... but sadly I don't see that happening any time soon. The next one we have to look forward to is Cyrano, but we still have awhile to wait until it gets aired.

Piazza, like many LCT shows, was on Great PErformances. It was a rare thing that Legally Blonde was recorded while still running.

Posted: 2/18/08 at 7:06pmPiazza was on Live from Lincoln Center, not Great Performances. Company will be on Great Performances. The difference is in the contracts- Live from Lincoln Center permits one broadcast, and no DVD release. Great Performances allows for a DVD release.

Except not really.
If it had been on Great Performances, it would be on DVD by now.

Posted: 2/18/08 at 11:11pmNot neccisarily, but the big difference between the two series is that Live at Lincoln Center is broadcast (sorry) live. Great Performances is not. They are edited and such, which is why they are often released on DVD, but not always. Regardless, it is POSSIBLE that some Great Performances unreleased as of now (Crazy for You, etc.) might one day see DVD release because they are edited of mistakes and such. The Lincoln Center broadcasts will never be released because of their live-ness, however sad this may be.
