I remember reading that the dream sequence in this Fiddler revival is based on a painting, but I don't recall it's title. Anyone?

Yes and no - it's based on ALL of Chagall's paintings. They're amazing. I was looking at one the other day at MoMA - it's so powerful.

Yes, that's the one at MoMA - it's my favorite one.
how is the production based on these? I need some production photos to compare, please...

I and the Village?
YEah.
In case no one wants to read the article, it says that Chagall's influence has been virtually eliminated in the revival, giving it the feeling of "Mother Russia" (aka the Birch Trees)....
The only scene that retains any resemblence to Chagall's work is the dream sequence...see the picture above..

I have the booklet at home, which is a great picture of the dream sequence, but this is the best I could find...

I love the current revival of FIDDLER. I think it's beautiful and perfect.

I haven't seen Harvey, I meant Alfred Molina. He was perfection.

Eh, when I saw Molina I thought he was good, but lacked the yiddishkeit (I know, they wanted to de-jew it...but still)
After seeing Harvey, I had a BRAND NEW appreciation for Al.

saw Harvey last nite. he wasnt as bad as i imagined. he spoke way too fast, so it all sounded like a person who had a tracheotomy talking. it still lacks all jewish soul, though. Updated On: 2/13/05 at 07:26 PM

Marc Chagall is one of my favotite artists. I never knew that his painting influenced Fiddler on The Roof. The musical was also based on a series of short stories by Sholom Aleichem . One of those stories w3as called Tevye the Milkman.

And one was called The Milkman's Daughters...
Ya, I think most people know that...
It's VERY interesting, though...!
we have LE VIOLONISTE BLEU hanging in our living room :)
Just finished an essay on the production history of FIDDLER....
Chagall's work influenced the entire making of FIDDLER; in fact, Bock, Harnick, Stein and Jerome Robbins decided they wanted a Chagall-inspired design even before they hired Boris Aronson. Aronson's sets, of course, looked like Chagall paintings, with the same splashes of colour and nostalgic expressionism. Leveaux's revival is the only major production not to incorporate Aronson's original designs.
Even the title, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, is derived from a Chagall painting. Nowhere in Sholom Aleichem's work is there a violinist perched on a rooftop; the image is taken from Chagall.

I can't tell from that reproducton of "I and the Village", but there is a Chagall painting that actually has a bride flying through the air - as in the current revival.
