As I was watching Broadway Beat the Chita Rivera segment I noticed that alot of current Broadway stars went to the opening night performances....and I was thinking...if everyone is there..than awhole lot of understudies must have went on in alot of other Broadway shows.
Did anyone else notice that?
there must have even been a Phantom understudy.
I believe Chita opened on something like a Sunday night, making it possible for many performers to attend because they didn't have shows have their own to be doing.

yeah, i think they usually have openings on the off nights, so other performaners can go and support.
Don't a lot of shows open on Monday so it's possible?
Chita's show DID open on a Sunday -- December 11. I was at Woman in White down the street, and saw all the spotlights and people in black tie heading towards that theatre.
Yes, sometimes a show's opening night isn't on a regularly scheduled performance night. The recent revival of Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf opened on a Sunday with a 5pm show.
They also make some opening nights begin early, so that way actors can make the red carpet appearance and then go to their show.

Theatreguy is correct. Chita opened on a sunday at 6:30. Very few shows have a sunday night performance.

75% of the time shows open on Thursday, so reviews and other things can make into Friday and weekend editions of newspapers and trade publiciations. Sunday and Monday night are also possible, usually utilized if another show is opening that week or the week before.
