News and Rumor Thread:

Motown founder Berry Gordy's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (July 15-Aug. 12, 2007), a book musical that will weave songs from the Motown library into a narrative will be in LA's Ahmanson in a pre-Broadway run.

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

It's such a shame that such great music will be wasted on what will inevitably be a piece of crap.

It's not a rumor, LA Times said it will be among the 06/07 season:

The upcoming season will feature Motown founder Berry Gordy's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" (July 15-Aug. 12, 2007), a book musical that will weave songs from the Motown library into a narrative, but which will be the sole new offering in a season that will also include Broadway's "Doubt" (Sept. 27-Oct. 29), "The Light in the Piazza" (Nov. 1-Dec.10), "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (Feb.7-March 18, 2007) and "Twelve Angry Men" (March 29-May 6, 2007) as well as Matthew Bourne's previously announced dance theater piece "Edward Scissorhands" (Dec. 12-31), which premiered in London in 2005.

Big deal. "Dreamgirls" was the same thing, it just didn't have Motown songs. And as for "Sister Act"...well, they're massacring that by adding a new stage score instead.

Did this immediately remind anyone else of STEPMOM? Such a good movie! I love Susan Sarandon. I love that song. (sigh)

All I'm saying is...it's been done.

Actually what your saying is it hasn't been done. If sister act has new music and Dreamgirls had original music than this hasn't been done. At least Gordy's doing it, so hopefully there's a chance of it not being so terrible.

It turns out that a workshop has already been done..but it was kept very "hush hush". The only lead I know about from the workshop is Freda Payne.

For those of you too young to remember:
Freda had Pop Hit #3 in the U.S. and #1 in the U.K. in 1970 with her pop smash "Band of Gold." She later returned to the U.S. Top 40 Billboard charts twice more with "Deeper & Deeper" and "Bring the Boys Home."

Her sister, Scherrie Payne (who is sometimes known as "the little lady with the big voice"), was a member of the Supremes from 1973 to 1977.
