Defying Gravity: It's not about talent or technique when getting a job now-a-days...it's about knowing how to sell yourself and convince people that you're good and can handle it. You can have the worst technique in the world, but land a job because you know how to market yourself and convince people that you are good.
And of course no one is perfect, but at 100 dollars a seat, the leads voice shouldn't sound like it's going through puberty, nor should anyone look like they're having tics (unless it's called for), and if there's unnecessary tension, which can be corrected so easily, it's not exactly what I would call good technique...that simple. Plus, maybe it wasn't like this for Idina prior to Wicked, but that's what it is right now. She knew how to market herself and that's how she got her claim to fame. Not a matter of technique at all.

AdoAnnie, even though she may not be doing it "technically" correct, she sounds hella awesome so let it go...

annie it seems like that's the name of the game on bway. whatever it takes to market yourself.
although i don't think idina had to convince most people that she was good. she was awesome in rent and i think she had them convinced that she knew her stuff.
*hands soap box back to annie*
people chill, everyone has there own technique...shoshana,idina,eden,krisyt....they all have a diffrent sound than them and not everynight can be the broadway leads best night. Some nights arent just amazing, and every night cant..we all have our good and amazing and bad days (me as a performer i have them most often)...look people idina has a werid technique that im not the biggest fan of but shes very good.Shoshana is feirce and has a wide range of things she can do...shes a huge soprano, she mixes a lot ,she can do r&b,gospel...really anything she wants. And i love idina to death i just dont think her range of things she can do and her vocal technique is all that amazing ,thays my opinion. And again not evernight has to be amazing people. But whenever i see defying gravity its beeen amazing.Adoannie baby do u even know what technique is WHO CARES IF ITS A 100 DOLLARS A SEAT THE ACTORS DONT THINK ABOUT THAT,THEY ARE JUST HAPPY TO BE PERFORMING AND DOING WHAT THEY LOVE TO DO (AND GETTING WORK)

Stop saying chill. Everyone hear is chilled except for a few disgruntled Idina fans who can't stand her being described as anything other than perfect. Stop taking it personally, go back to the first page, and please read my rant. We're just having a discussion on technique. It's OKAY to disagree.
PS-AdoAnnie's got a great point. When you're a performer, it's all about marketing yourself as a product and getting people to buy into you.

I'm almost tempted to start a rant on our society's obsession with avoiding confrontation. Except when it comes to international matters...

Thanks Amneris! I'd take the job in a second, too.
OT- Mattio is that you on your icon? I just stopped to look and then couldn't look at the thread again. Way to go.

Thanks! And yes that's me in my icon.
Thanks mattio.
I want to be a casting director and publicist, so that's why I'm so picky about stuff like this.
We're all allowed to disagree about this...it is a discussion...
Mattio...if you thought my previous post was directed at you and that's what your rant was about...it was not. I was talking to munkustrap. And when I said just because one may not like the sound of someone's voice, that doesn't mean his or her technique is wrong, I meant what I said. That doesn't mean you have to like a single thing Idina does or you even have to like her technique. My point was that her technique really isn't as harmful to the voice like most people believe it to be.
Adoannie925...That's a good point (about her jaw...), but who knows whether or not she's getting tension in her jaw from that? She's far from the only singer who does it. Some people just have bigger mouths, lol. I don't doubt that sometimes she may have tension because she does miss notes, but most of the time she has a clean tone and a smooth vibrato, which leads me to doubt the idea that she may be holding too much tension.
