Hi folks,

I've always read interviews and columns and advice articles etc etc where actors claim to have a job that both pays their bills and is flexible enough so they can duck out and audition as necessary.

I guess my question is .. what are these mythical jobs? Even the traditional waiting tables job can not simply be left on a whim when needed, however I've read many articles where actors claim they are able to leave work, audition, and come back as necessary while still making enough to support their sometimes very expensive craft.

Any ideas?

You hear a lot about waiting tables....all you need to do is get someone else to pick up your shift, temp work. No one said it was EASY to do both. And many waiters just work nights, too.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I work in retail as do a lot of my actor friends. My job happens to be in Midtown literally one block from Equity so I can scoot out if i have to. Retail/customer service has worked out really nicely for me and my friends. Actors are usually good sellers too! The better you are, the more likely managers are to help you out.

I've had 3 different retail jobs and they've all been REALLY flexible. As long as I communicate and do my half, I can usually leave and come back as long as I keep in touch. If I'm gonna be longer than expected then I call them.

No job is foolproof so there might be a few auditions you can't make every once in a while. A lot of my friends temp too... most of the time they can always leave and come back (no one really pays attention).
