Don't get me wrong, I love Ahrens and Flaherty. But can someone give me a clue as to why "Lucky Stiff" SEEMS TO (I could be off here) have become one of the most popular shows for High Schools, Colleges, and Regional Theatres thru out, at least the South East, the country.
I like the show, but it seems like it is bordering on "BATB"-like liscening popularity.

MTI doesn't have all the listings for upcoming productions that I have heard, read, planned.
But hey, I could be wrong, maybe it is just a local fad and I am making the rest up in my head.

Maybe because couldn't get the rights to Urinetown, Throughly Modern Millie, or High School Musical, on account of them all being over-licensed. :)
That aside, I think Lucky Stiff is one of the underappreciated gems of modern musical comedy.

Then it probably is an illegal production.

Posted: 8/21/07 at 3:03amI'm not sure I'd call Lucky Stiff a "gem," but there is some good stuff there. It's a small cast, sets don't have to be very big, and it's not all that challenging. I wouldn't call it the new Suessical, either (especially since it's almost 20 years older than Suessical), but a theatre dept can do it on a small budget. And shows like that usually do well in community/hs/college production. Plus, if you know that it's the first show that A&F ever wrote together, you can certainly see the promise they had (still have?).

Cast of ten, simple sets and costumes, sounds good with just a piano or a small combo = perfect for small theatre groups.
Hell - our theatre did it back in 1990!
