When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

It's amazing how some people like, say lupone76, actually expect wit to come out of message board posts and even perceive their authors as actually *trying* to be witty. I'm guessing the anger comes from failing to impress Your Highness and not making your Majesty's mundane message board experience more entertaining.
What are we, your court jesters? Nuh-uh! XD
At any rate, LuPone is a nifty actress. It is often said that she is great at playing herself, which I think is baloney. Chick could definitely act, whether she's up for it or not, is another story, LOL.
She's a no-nonsense kind of gal, and has a knack for showing what she really thinks or feels about things without the usual filter. She famously told the orchestra to take a hike when they tried to shoo her off the stage for talking 5 weeks to finish her acceptance speech for her 2nd Tony win.
Miss LuPone makes no mystery about the way she feels about some of her past shows. She thinks Les Mis is cool, if a tad whiney, but she highly disliked her role as Fantine for being onstage all of 20 minutes. When something to do onstage was thought up (appear as a bullet boy as most do after they croak), she took to ducking away and hiding from directors so they wouldn't ask her, but was one day spotted and pointed out by a cast member (the one who plays the old crone). Her hiding days were over and she reluctantly donned boy clothes for the 2nd act, but eventually slipped under the radar again and took to kicking back backstage and missing her cues for the finale, LOL.
Miss LuPone also engages in theft, which she is very proud of and eager to admit. Oh, she doesn't steal from purses or banks or what have you, she steals costumes from the shows she appears in. She has stolen something from every show she's ever done, except Les Mis--she felt she had more than enough dish rags at home, so she did not steal Fantine's rags from the theatre.
Her Fantine won an Olivier Award for best actress in a musical, if that tells you anything about her acting, and is often cited as having been the definitive take on the role. LuPone sums up the role--apart from boring--as having been a piece of cake. When asked to share her approach, the two-time Tony Award winning Diva said, "I'm really good in those weepy parts."
So, there ya have it. From the mouth of La LuPone herself. I think she is a fabulous actress. She thinks she is a fabulous actress, except when being forced to fake an accent. Then that's when even she admits to not being a very good actress.
Regardless, we love her. <3

She's my favorite Mamet actress - not that there'that much competition. I thought she did stellar work in The Old Neighborhood and was also quite good in Edmond.
