Wow. These reviews amaze me because I thought it was brilliant. I think Groff is an excellent actor as is the entire cast. The music is GORGEOUS. It was a terrific production of this play.
But clearly not for everyone.
I went Saturday with a friend of mine who is a university theatre professor who recently directed a production of Medea. He was very anxious to see this production. We left after 30 minutes. It was the most tedious theatrical production I have ever tried to sit through.
Saw it last night. Thought it was cool, but also at times completely tedious and very very difficult to sit through. I actually kind of loved Groff, though, completely in spite of myself. I didn't think he was right for this role, but he found something that worked. (And I've always thought Dionysus was kind of sexy.)
The chorus stuff was what was so tedious. They just went on way too long.
Agreed. That needed to be shortened.
Wow. Amazing. But maybe because those sections felt like opera? I thought they were gorgeous.
They did, a little bit, and I didn't necessary mind that part of it. I really liked the score, and just because I thought they were long and tedious doesn't mean I didn't think they were beautiful. I just found them drawn out and redundant, which, beautiful as they might have been, also made them get, as they went on, kind of boring for me. Just my opinion.
No, no. I can totally see that. They didn't drive the plot completely--but I didn't mind it because the whole piece had a sense of ritual to it, which is perfect.
Sidenote: How fun is True Blood's use of this story?
