In all honesty, I dont think they wanted alot of people. If they held it on a weekend or gave lots of notice, I am sure they feared they would be swamped and overwhelmed, just like the lotteries. The cast still needs to perform and I doubt they want to spend hours signing CDs.
They were fully aware of what they were doing.
