"The new Broadway musical, THE BOY FROM OZ starring Hugh Jackman, who recently won the Tony Award, played it’s highest grossing week ever (8 performances through Sunday, June 20) with a net gross of $982,845.37 setting a house record at the Imperial Theatre."

Now, is this even news anymore?? Of course it's going to set a record since you can't even get into the theater for under $76! When these shows announce "New House Record!" all they are doing is restating Broadways need for greed.

Yeah, what's with these people coming out to see Broadway shows? Are they crazy? We true theatre fans don't want any of the shows to be successes or popular! What the hell is the Imperial Theatre doing? They aren't allowed to have any prosperity, damnit!

But seriously, what's wrong with that? A show is doing good on Broadway, let it run. This business is about money. Without money there won't be any new shows.

That's not what I was saying. What I was saying is that when a theatre raises it's prices to an extreme measure like the Imperial did, and than reports that it broke all records, that isn't news.

It's like saying that HARRY POTTER 3 is the highest grossing film of all time. Well, when ticket prices are raised to over $10 each, of course it will be. It's not saying how many people saw it, just that the people that did see it are paying a whole lot more than they used to.

Matt;
I agree with you. Also; broadway has become a bit like Vegas. the shows are busy and packing them in when the town is busy or there is a convention in town. I miss the days when seeing a show was the reason for the trip to NY.

Seeing a show is definitely still a reason people come to New York. The shows in question aren't necessarily the ones the theater freaks would recommend, that's all. :)

And you know what? If BFO is packing them in, good for them. It's not the greatest show ever written, but the talent in it is phenomenal, and I'm not just referring to Hugh Jackman. Updated On: 6/21/04 at 04:45 PM

It's not as if the show has broken even at this point - so, good for them!
