The Broadway Theatre Community

I have always loved Broadway, and dreamed of working in the industry (not as a performer, but rather, behind-the-scenes or in the creative process).

I am a recent graduate, with a double major in Psychology and Communications, and a minor in Business Marketing. I have extensive experience in the television industry (8 years), and would love to try and make a switch to the theatre industry.

How would I go about doing this? What are the best resources to help one find a job in the Broadway community? Have any of you ever worked on a Broadway or Off-Broadway show (not as a performer)? How did you get into the industry?

Any help would greatly be appreciated!!

Honestly, you know people. Network as much as you can. Every theatre job I've gotten has come from knowing someone.

Apply to everything you can- internships are a good start. Meet people. Also, choose what you want to do- wanting to work in theatre is one thing, but if you have a specific position you're interested in, that will help guide you.

Check out internships, and I think Playbill.com has a jobs listing! You might find something there that you're interested in and qualify for.

Thank you both so much for the advice!

Does anyone else know of any resources that would provide job listings and/or internships? Does anyone have any personal experiences regarding how they got into the industry?

As was already mentioned, Playbill lists jobs and internships. New York City Center and Roundabout also list jobs and internships on their websites (although I think you must be a student for the Roundabout internships).

I know there's another website that specifically lists jobs and internships in the arts, and I can't seem to remember what it is. If I can remember it, I'll add it here.

ETA: Here it is.

I would also look on websites for as many Off-Broadway theatre companies as you can think of, to see what jobs they might have open.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad
