I saw the matinee of The Color Purple today at Fair Park. I was very impressed overall with the musical. I've never read the book or even seen the movie, so this was my first experience with the story. I thought it was amazing.
Even though I've only seen the musical, I could definitely tell that there was alot of plot squeezed into the show. I thought the first act was the messiest with this, and it improved as the show went along and into the second act. The crux of the show is Celie, and her character carries you through the masses of characters introduced in the first act.
I thought that Jeanette Bayardelle did a wonderful job with this character with an understated and heartfelt performance. Felicia P Fields was obviously a great Sophia. These were definitely the stand out performances. We had an understudy for Shug - Renee Brown, and she did a good job with that important role.
While Cecile's story is just gut wrenching and why the musical works, the other strong point is the artistic side of the production. The colors, lighting, and set are breath taking. This is the first show in a long time that I've stopped to admire the technical aspects of the show.
Music Hall was packed, and the show received a good reception. There was a standing ovation before the show even ended. I would definitely see this musical again if it came to town or if it was produced by a local company, and I am looking forward to the movie. I highly suggest trying to get down to the fair to see it if you can.

So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
