Is there anyone in Atlanta who has seen this and can post an opinion? I am very curious about what the music is like and whether the book is strong.
If you have been following this show (there have been articles on a few websites), you should know it does not open until this evening. Here is the Playbill.com

Yeah, I know - guilty as charged. I was just sort of posting in advance so that if anyone were to see it tonight, they might respond. Sue me...
I live in Atlanta and will be seeing The Color Purple on Oct. 1. I believe the show just opens tonight. The Atlanta Constitution newspaper gave the show a good amount of press last Sunday. I understand that this show has the largest budget of any show ever produced at The Alliance Theatre. ("Aida" was developed at this theatre by Disney, Elton John, and Tim Rice... before moving to Broadway). I am most excited about seeing La Chanze and crew in this musical adaptation of this classic. I will post my review of The Color Purple on this board after I see it. Updated On: 9/9/04 at 11:12 AM
I will be seeing "The Color Purple" on Sept 26th and I am so excited about getting to see LaChanze in this role! The cast seems to be full of great names and I can only hope that with the budget, a great book writer, a great story, and the cast that this turns out to be a good pre-broadway tryout. I might try to see the show earlier to get a perspective, but for now it is Sept 26th! I'll post asap!
dancinfan....I wasn't trying to be nasty. Just didn't know if you were aware that it was opening tonight. No need to call the attorneys!!!

I Love LACHANZE. She is one of the best talents around. She would make a good DREAMGIRL. I loved her in ONTI and Ragtime.

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a little longer than expected to see The Color Purple. Thanks to hurricane Ivan's impending winds and rain here, cool cat Tony Bennett has postponed his (outdoor) Atlanta concert scheduled for this Friday until Friday, Oct. 1. That's the evening that I was supposed to see The Color Purple. In order for me to attend both events, the good folks at The Alliance Theatre were able to exchange my Color Purple seats for another evening - Oct. 14th. I'll still post my review, but 'yall will have to wait a little bit longer for it! Good things come to those who wait, right?! By the way, the show is selling very well here in Atlanta and has gotten positive early buzz.

I heard the demos of the music a few months ago in Los Angeles and it's FANTASTIC. Smart and sophisticated, rootsy and raw, jazz, gospel, blues, african, (often in the same tune) theatrical, not a bunch of shallow songs...it's great. the music has real depth like the best theatre - the funny songs have a tinge of melancholy, the sad songs have some humor, and all of it has a whole lot of soul. The production team is great and if the rest of the show lives up to the music - GET IN LINE!
previews started last week, it opens proper this weekend, and I'll be in Atlanta on Saturday night to see it. Can't wait.

Additionally, as you may know, this is not the musical version of Spielberg's movie, it's starting out all over from the original book (which is great) and author Alice Walker loves the way it's turned out (from what I'm told).
