POSSIBLE SPOILERS
I felt so bad for LaChanze and Elisabeth Withers-Mendes on Friday when I saw the show. After "Too Beautiful for Words" during their kiss scene, someone from the mezzanine yelled out "Ewwww!" loud enough for the entire theater to hear. A considerable group of the theater laughed at it. I was horrified. So I began to wonder whether this is fairly common.

This didn't happen when I saw it...was it a child or an adult voice?
Just wondering.
How horrible for the performers this happened!

It's nothing these two talented women aren't use to. In Broadway.com's Q&A Session with LaChanze, she was talking about all of the different reactions they get from that kiss, and various other scenes in the show.
But it's still ridiculous.

i thought the kiss was fairly quick and not as drawn out as in the movie
in the movie they're kissing for a few minutes, in the show its like 10 seconds if even that
but yeah, LaChanze said that there are audience members that say "eww" or "oh no they didnt!" (:P) in her bway.com q & a videos
seriously, though, what immature audience members!

oh gosh i was there that night and heard it too!
and another thing i never understood...why, when nettie returns with celie's children at the end of the show, do people in the audience crack-up when they're reunited? it is such a beautiful moment in the show and the three times i have seen the show, people ALWAYS laugh at that point - it sorta ruins it for me...

Someone did that when I saw RENT a while ago, and they were sitting in the second row. People are ridiculous.

Posted: 10/2/06 at 6:12pmI saw it during previews on a Friday night and there were quiet reactions to it. However this guy behind me made a comment loud enough for just the people close by could hear and I turned, shot him a look and said something to the effect of "Not you of all people". From his conversation before curtain, I knew he was a black gay man.
