The Color Purple Men

Just wondering since we're heading into Tony Season. During the OBC of The Color Purple I believe Brandon Victor Dixon was nominated for the role of Harpo, but I haven't seen, anybody on here advocate a nomination for Kyle Scatliffe or Isiah who plays Mister. Is it that this year is just to strong of a category for the men of Color Purple to be nominated? Or are their performances not strong enough? Thoughts or opinions?

The Color Purple Men

I'd be shocked if any of the men were nominated. The women in this revival really steal the show. Plus there are so many strong contenders from Hamilton and She Loves Me (and I personally hope Paul Alexander Nolan from Bright Star) that I doubt there will be available spots.

I figured as much, such a shame though I'm sure they're doing a excellent job, but Erivo, Hudson, and Brooks, and even the church ladies are all that I hear about. Cant wait to see it next month, but from what I'm seeing I am very much interested in Isiah's performance of Mister, I've heard good things.

They really are both amazing, but as stated before the show really does get stolen by the ladies. In saying that though, Harpo's duet (Any Little Thing) and Mister's solo (Celie's Curse) are really well sung and acted. I think both the actors deserve a nomination, but with the cast of Hamilton and She Loves Me there are some extremely strong male competitors.

tl:dr they're both amazing!

The Color Purple Men

It's a very competitive year, especially with HAMILTON likely getting three featured actor slots but I wouldn't be surprised to see Isaiah Johnson get in based on the strength of the marvelous performance he is turning in as Mister. It's a real testament to his talent that he manages to make Mister's transition toward the end so believable and touching since it's one of the musical's clunkiest elements. I don't think the ladies "steal the show." It is a show written FOR the female characters and the women rightly own it. Both men (as well as Kevyn Morrow as Pa) are giving impeccable performances that make the characters feel fully realized. Johnson's performance of "Mister's Song" is haunting and Kyle Scatliffe's chemistry with Danielle Brooks is delicious. I'd love to see one of them or both of them manage to get a slot. Really, the work that Doyle achieved with this cast is astounding.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
