It's a very competitive year, especially with HAMILTON likely getting three featured actor slots but I wouldn't be surprised to see Isaiah Johnson get in based on the strength of the marvelous performance he is turning in as Mister. It's a real testament to his talent that he manages to make Mister's transition toward the end so believable and touching since it's one of the musical's clunkiest elements. I don't think the ladies "steal the show." It is a show written FOR the female characters and the women rightly own it. Both men (as well as Kevyn Morrow as Pa) are giving impeccable performances that make the characters feel fully realized. Johnson's performance of "Mister's Song" is haunting and Kyle Scatliffe's chemistry with Danielle Brooks is delicious. I'd love to see one of them or both of them manage to get a slot. Really, the work that Doyle achieved with this cast is astounding.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
