Just saw the fantastic new play at the Signature. The audience was enraptured for two and a half hours with no intermission. When was the last time that happened? It is uproariously funny in spots, harrowing in others. I’m not going to include any spoilers. 5 high school friends meet again for their 20th high school reunion. It’s a fairly basic premise, almost like the parlor game structure. But we are in the very exciting hands of a great playwright, so much is about to reveal itself that transcends this kind of dramatic structure.
The cast is pitch perfect, especially awe inspiring having to hold our attention for such a long time. We were warned they may call “line”- which did happen. It’s a very wordy play, it’s impressive how they are not all falling all over each other. A great director has helped to realize this very special play. This play is the reason we are so lucky to live in this city that gives news plays top drawer opportunities. I can see this transferring for a longer run. In a way, and I'm dating myself, it reminded me of what it was like seeing This Is Our Youth for the first time.
