THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES Previews Oct 9 2025, 09:22:36 AM
Last night, I was reminded of the stories people tell who saw the original Merrily We Roll Along. At the first preview, the energy was through the roof. The overture started and the audience went wild. But then scene, by scene, by scene...the walk outs started. Make no mistake, this is not musically on the level of Merrily, but Schwartz is aiming much higher than Wicked. He desperately wants to be taken seriously here, but every time you think its going to soar, it just veers off and die

This is the exact feedback I would give. The real culprit here is the director. She knows nothing about a musical and how it has to function. If she is unable to get the writers (two book writers and the composer/lyricist) to deliver for the actors what they actually need to tell the story, why put her at the helm?
Why doesn't Ulysses have a great musical moment at the end? Something we can really latch onto musically?

GINGER TWINSIES Previews? Jul 22 2025, 08:30:42 AM
I need to preface this by saying I don’t remember the Lindsay Lohan version well. Also, I don’t know the popular Instagram account by the shows creator. It’s obvious from the second the comedy start the producers are hoping for an Oh Mary sized hit. It’s really hard to make sense of this. The slamming doors, the raunchy humor, the clever staging and design, the incredible cast- it’s all there. Razor sharp. There are a few laugh out loud, knee slapping moments. Th

JOHN PROCTOR IS THE VILLAIN Previews Mar 21 2025, 12:47:42 AM
Best play of the season! I loved everything- from the incredible cast, the perfect direction and design. What I loved most was how fearless and in your face the play is. Does not apologize but isn’t polemic. Great art and very entertaining!
Some further thoughts:
The playwright never lets us see any character as just one thing. The layers are complicated and well earned.
The parallels to Crucible are incredible without being obvious, like The Inheritance was to Howa

What a marvel this play is! So much humor and pathos about a daughter trying to excavate this history of her mom. The play breaks free from traditional storytelling at times, which only served to prove form should always be dictated by content. The cast is perfection. The direction is beautiful. A more perfect production of this play I cannot imagine. As others have said, the second act nude scene is incredible for how bold it is and yet how earned it is. I was so moved

TAMMY FAYE Previews Nov 2 2024, 06:00:29 PM
Hi everyone. Saw a preview last night. What a disappointment. It is a show so confused in tone, so unclear in its intent, so overblown and yet totally lacking in every way. The Brits do love to skewer America, and usually shower accolades on themselves when this happens...anyone remember the play "Enron" a few seasons back. A huge hit in London. A total failure in New York. It is sad to see any show fail this miserably, considering how many people will soon be out of work. This

BLUEBERRIES eyeing Broadway? Jun 30 2024, 07:59:12 PM
Oh no. I slept through some of the beginning. It’s not a good play. Those two things are not necessarily related. I didn’t find “the twist” very compelling.

Erivo, Graham, Gotay, and more to lead A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC IN CONCERT Jun 28 2024, 12:50:00 AM
Ruthie was hilarious. A total star in every way. Every Day a Little Death was astonishing.
Ron sounded perfect. He was great.
Shuler was miscast but earned his laughs.
Marsha had a much stronger singing voice than I think anyone expected, but it took her awhile to get confidence.
Jason sang the heck out of Henrik and got tons a great laughs.
Kersten, who I have never heard of, was the best thing in the show, after Ruthie. I’

Stay in your seats so you can experience all of the magic of the lighting and get a better view of the singers and band. You have excellent seats.

ILLINOISE Reviews Apr 25 2024, 03:52:20 PM
I can only speak (this week) to what I saw at the Armory… but having seen all of this seasons musicals Illinoise is by far the best musical of the season. Stunning night.

PRELUDE TO A KISS musical Apr 21 2024, 05:46:37 PM
LOTS OF SPOILERS!!!!
I will try to contribute a little bit more to your worthy pan. In its current state, the show is such a huge misfire. Where you righty lay the blame is on the director. What a monumental disaster of direction. Every wrong choice from set design to lighting to casting that could be made to sabotage a new work has been made. How this man (the artistic director) was approved to direct this, after Craig Lucas has worked with such greats, is the real mystery here.

THE WIZ Opening Night Critics’ Reviews Apr 17 2024, 05:18:54 PM
A very talented cast, who never knew a vocal riff they couldn’t sing, in one of the most cheap and misguided revivals in years. All blame must rest with the inept director who also tortured us with The Notebook. Dear producers… fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice…

THE OUTSIDERS Opening Night Critics’ Reviews Apr 12 2024, 06:27:48 PM
These reviews are much better than I predicted. I was wrong about the critics reception. Now, as for my thoughts on the show, I refer you to my prediction of the critics reviews.

THE OUTSIDERS Opening Night Critics’ Reviews Apr 11 2024, 08:12:44 PM
Mostly negative. Forgettable cast in a fairly boring adaptation. Rumble will get all the attention despite it being cool stylistically but lacks a dramatic arc.

THE WIZ Previews Apr 5 2024, 11:55:52 AM
I won’t beat this dead horse, but your post is perfect. The show has such talent on stage, but the production team failed on all levels (except maybe the Emerald City vogue scene at the top of Act Two).
Perhaps this will signal the end of the directing career for Shele Williams who butchered two beloved properties this season. (The Notebook is the other, featuring some of worst direction I’ve ever seen in any show)

LEMPICKA - dramaturgical advice Mar 27 2024, 08:54:55 PM
How arrogant of me to post this thinking anyone involved in the show will see this… but why not. Here goes:
Your show is about the beauty of living, survival is at the core. Almost every character is a survivor of some kind, but especially your lead. Beauty (not only meaning pretty) is your way into the evening.
Your fourth song is I believe called “Beauty” and it’s the first moment that actually earns the audience cheers. Take this song and create an ad

LEMPICKA Previews Mar 26 2024, 06:42:26 PM
Does anyone remember the musical version of “Metropolis” with Judy Kuhn? The bombastic new musical at the Longacre has more in common with it than might seem obvious.
Machines over people, as a theme.
Art Deco design (or is it futurist?)
Synthetic 80’s pop music with deafening electronic orchestrations.
A leading lady not quite able to carry the show.
An inept script that makes it very difficult for the audience to care about anyone or
