You need to bear in mind I was a great fan of Danny La Rue, when I say that the wig line should not have shown up in the close up pictures, because they would not have shown up on stage!
To my mind he was the perfect Dolly Levi given his ability to quick quip and time a joke as Dolly Gallagher Levi would have.
Shame about the wig though. Because I have a story!
Years ago when I worked in Local Radio, Danny was playing at a local venue, which was, to say the least a "gymnasium". I was sent along to interview the legend, who had not arrived, so I interviewed his wig master instead, who said "Danny won't be impressed, last night The Theatre Royal,Lincoln, tonight a gymnasium with chairs"!!
Mama do you happen to have any more photographs of Danny? You seem such a bottomless resource!! I was in my early teens through the 70's and he was just the biggest star. I remember watching Charley's Aunt on TV and I don't think she was ever so glamorous.
He brought the Danny La Rue show to Glasgow and I think it was the most lavish production the city had ever seen. I remember reading that he believed tat killed music hall and absolutely nothing he ever did could be considered tat!!
Are there any photographs of him in the pro-am La Cage? I would love to have seen him as Albin.
Thanks so much for the lovely threads about Danny he just sounds so genuine.
God bless him!
"Your eyes..... they shine like the pants on my blue serge suit"
The national tours that Danny took around the major theatres of the UK in the 70s and 80s were probably the most stunningly staged variety shows ever seen. He had a show with at least 10 or 12 set stage pieces with a touring orchestra of 15, 12 dancers and four backing singers! Shows of this size were rarely seen outside the London Palladium. Danny would tour these shows from March to May then open that production in a major seaside resort like Bournemouth, Blackpool or Margate etc for 16 weeks!!! It would then tour till Christmas when Danny would pop on some of the most spectacular pantomime dame frocks the eyes could wish to see. A brand new show would follow next year and this he did for nearly 15 years. The man was a genius and a most dedicated performer who surrounded himself with the best of the best. Shirley Bassey always joked in her 1970s concerts that she couldn't retire because she was afraid Danny La Rue would take her place!
