Both Bette and Liza got special Tonys that year for "adding lustre to the Broadway Season"

My memory may be faulty, but I never thought the Tony committee was doing Midler and Minnelli a favor. I thought the Theatre Wing was upping the star wattage of its broadcast.
While you're at You Tube, don't miss the short clip of Bette Midler answering the question, "Will you ever work with Shelly Long again?"

Why Bette's turned down hosting the Oscars I'll never understand.
For the same reason she turned down invitations to be a presenter after her 1982 appearance: she knows when to leave her audience wanting more.
