dr dillamond, nessarose, and boq are all exceptionally boring in the wrong hands (i wanted to shoot logan lipton when i saw the tour, and sadly he wasn't acting much)
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

Most of the characters in WIcked are that way- other than Elphaba and Glinda.

Ellen in Miss Saigon. She has a couple of decent songs, but you spend so much time wrapped up in Kim's ordeal that when this pale, uptight prig comes along she fails to impress at all.
Aida and Radames from Aida are pretty dull as nearly every word out of their mouth concerns the hopelessness of their situation and the exceeding burdens they carry. They become like a black hole to me sucking the life from the audience.
Also, what the heck is up with the character of Doatsy Mae in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. She is this nothing background character for the entire show and then she suddenly takes center stage and sings a song about being taken for granted before vanishing back into the set. Huh? Why did she rate any number at all.
Also, Jack from Into the Woods doesn't start my blood racing either.
Have to say I am a bit surprised about so many singling out Johanna from Sweeney Todd. I have seen some actresses portray her as if she is on the verge of a breakdown and some, like Lauren Molina, play her with a hint of camp (which I like best). However, I can never say I found the character boring. No offense to any of the talented actors who play the role, but Anthony is written as a bit of a stick.

Agreed. I think the best people who have played those roles are Christopher Fitzgerald as Boq, Jenna Leigh Green as Nessa and Sean Mcourt does an awesome Dillamond.

Billy Bigelow? What the **** is that about? He's such a well developed and exiting character. A Hammerstein classic! I'd also have to disagree with someone's opinion of Lt. Cable from South Pacific. He's pretty well developed in my opinion.
Gee, well I'll have to agree with Anthony and Joanna, although I do beleive they written to be a dumb, lovestruck pair.

If you think about it, almost every show has their own non-descript character(s).
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia

Sorry, but Motormouth Maybelle ,"I Know Where I've Been" from "Hairspray" is far from dull.
Now if you picked really dull characters, you'd pick the cast of "Wicked" or that annoying answering machine from "Rent". "SPEEEEEEEEK" Yawn!

Not exactly modern musical theatre, but Fruma-Sarah in Fiddler on the Roof. It's as if Jerome Robbins, Sheldon Harnick, and Jerry Bock sat down, read their script, and thought, "Wow. This show sucks. What can we do to make it more interesting?"
Fruma-Sarah is just in there to make a boring show more "cool" but it only makes the show even more boring.
Modern theatre?
Mrs. Thistletwat in Avenue Q
Sir Bedevere in Spamalot
Sir Galahad in Spamalot
Cinderella's Father in Into the Woods
Jack's Mother in Into the Woods
Napoleon in SITPWG (even if Robert Westenberg is adorable)
Most characters in Wicked
Agreed with Anthony of Sweeney Todd. All he is is "OMG hot chick. Must elope with her." Totally one-dimensional.

Utterson in Jekyll. For that matter almost every character in Jekyll is useless because Leslie's book is so god-awful!

I think Jack's mother in Into the Woods is FAR from dull. I think that character is hilarious, I guess it depends on the actor portraying her.
To me Alfred Dolittle from My Fair Lady is a dull character. Maybe its not his character, but I feel like I am in pain every time I watch With A Little Bit of Luck. The song has funny lines but just drags on. Get Me to the Church on Time, is also fun, but seems to drag.

Someone said Brian in Avenue Q.
I don't think he is dull at all and he is very, very important to the show. The cast is small so every part is pretty important.
As someone else mentioned: Mrs. Thistletwat- I guess that is the most "insignifant" role, but I would hardly call it dull.
I think dull is a difficult word to define in terms of theatre. It's also quite vague. Are we talking about the actor or the character? They are characters/actors that have "small roles" but they are far from dull or insignificant. If the director found them dull, boring or insignifant, then they wouldn't have the character in the show. Well, that is unless the character is supposed to be "dull"
P.S. I hate to use "small role" because "There are no small roles, only small actors" but, I can't think of a better phrase at the moment.

I know some may find Passion boring, but Fosca? Eep.
With a first song like "I Read"? Damn.
Antony and Johanna are are purposely one-dimensional, but I think they are supposed to be played with a bit of camp. Kiss Me is a HILARIOUS song... Not Betsy Joslyn CRAZY. I wanted to shoot that woman. They're the normal ones in the show. Mirror images of Sweeney/Begger Woman, Sweeney/Lovett, and the only lovers alive in the end.
I find Ellen the most interesting character in Miss Saigon. Chris is annoying, Kim has one too many "woe is me, my parents were killed" power-belt ballads. I feel like everyone wanders around stage wondering what to do with their oh-so-woe-filled lives, and Ellen comes in and wants things settled.
Julia in Wedding Singer, definately. Poor talented Benanti.
Half the characters in 42nd Street. Yes, I know you're excited about tap-dancing. Yeah, I know this is you're first Broadway show lead. Yes, I know it's a quarter-to-nine. Why is everyone so damn happy?

I agree with Mcfan2 that, depending on how she is portrayed, Cosette can be interesting. It can be a challenge to make Cosette interesting and give some depth to her character, but it can be done. Judy Khun apparently made Cosette interesting enough that she got nominated for a Tony.

Maurice is a little dull in Beauty and the Beast but just think if it wasn't for him Belle would have never went into the castle , right? I really don't remember, i am confused lol.

"Also Ambrose in "Hello, Dolly" "
we did that show last year, but the guy playing Ambrose was probabily the funniest person in the history of history...so he made it interesting. He made ambrose be almost as whiney as urmangarde and it was hillarious.

I couldn't disagree more. Aida and Radames are heartbreaking in Aida. I was enthralled from start to finish.
