This was such a fantastic show. Douglas Hodge is a comic genius and even after only three days in The Playhouse it's looking in great shape. I'll write something in more detail later on today when i'm more with it.
I've just got back, it was FANTASTIC!! There are some killer lines there, so many got applause! My fvourites were the cagelles, they were amazing, how do they do those moves? o_O To answer a queston you can't see the orchestra much, I think there's about 8 people in it. I don't want to spoil any of it, but there is a serious amount of sequins going on thre, and I now know why ther's an age limit of 18 on the tables...! I really lke Douglas Hodge (Albin) he rally rminde me of Alan Carr sometimes (I don't mean that in a mean way :P ), I thought Denis Lawson (Georges) was also really good, bit of a weird voice? And the accent kept slipping... Stuart Neal (Jean-Michelle) has a lovely voice, a vey differnt part to his part in LOTR! And Hason Pennycooke (Jacob)was HILARIOUS! The cagelles were amazing, some very good gymanasics from (I'm pretty sure it was..) Dane Quixall. Darren Carnall again a very different role from the last one I saw him play- Gollum! He was very good, they wre all fantastic. Very strong cast with good material, I'll be back! (I sat in the front row of the UC, reduced prices, definitely worth the £7.50!!)
Apologies for any spelling mistakes, my keyboard likes to pick and choose what letters it acctually uses >=( )
Sticky keyboards! Is there anything worse? Glad you liked the show I'm hoping to see in the next few days. I saw the Menier production 3 times so cant wait to see it in a real theatre!
Yes, having a broken keyboard and having to use an onscreen one!! That was horrible! The theatre is tiny!! I've never been in it before but it's seriously steep, and I had to lean forward the whole show, as the rail type thingy obscurred the whole stage, but there was no-one behind me (it was actually quite empty in the UC) The bit where they dance in "With Anne On My Arm" looks like if it were on a bigger stage it would start off in the middle and then go...bigger, cover more/open out, I can't remember the lingo =P, in the main dance dequence bit. Other than that it fits the theatre well I thought. I want to see it again now!
Its a gorgeous theatre and I've seen some amazing productions there in the last 30 years. Its such a a shame it never gets used. Im sure 'La Cage' fits there brilliantly!
See the last seat you can on the front row on the left? That's where I was!! =P There's a really tiny kiosk type thing for selling programmes and stuff, so sweet haha. And my god it takes ages to get to the top of those stairs!
