The girls of 'La Cage Aux Folles' return to the stage of a West End theatre tonight for the first time in 22 years! (Get to it before Graham Norton steps in!)
I also think Tracy Bennett and Paula Wilcox will have great fun in their new roles! I love Paula Wilcox- watch out for her Bette Davis one woman play coming into town next spring from the New End!
I love Paula Wilcox too, but not so sure about Tracie Bennett. I loved her in Corrie but seeing her in Hairspray, she looked emaciated and actually quite scary.
She was indeed! That added to the scariness. She looked like Cruella De Vil after the dalmatians had eaten all her Valium. Not Glenn Close, the cartoon one.
its strange to think that the London Palladium production got such a bad run with dreadful reviews and all the AIDS related **** that so wrongly surrounded it and closed just 8 months later. Yet just over a year after the production closed a one night concert at the very same theatre was a sellout within hours and tickets were like gold dust right up until curtain time. 90% of the company returned and also some star names in a brilliantly staged evening by Scott St Martin who was the original Chantel. The show was received with astounding positive applause and the occasional ovation- what should have happened during its proper run. Lets hope 'The Best Of Times' is now and this new production gets a good, healthy run.
As we've discussed here before mamasdoinfine the sets and costumes for that Palladium run were from the Australian production. I was recently passing the theatre where the show played here in Melbourne and you can very clearly now see the huge LA CAGE sign (painted on the side of the fly tower) bleeding through the years of paint jobs. That made me smile.
I saw Paula Wilcox many years ago in MY FAT FRIEND at the Comedy Theatre here, she was fresh off the success of Man About The House at the time.
