I just saw this for the first time at Georgetown University this weekend and found myself really enjoying the show - I had never heard of it beforehand and was pleasantly surprised to find it such a high energy, moving, and overall, fun piece.
Did anyone see the original Broadway production, or have any thoughts on the show? I'd love to hear what everyone has to say on it.

That's great that somebody is doing it! I've never seen it, but recently purchased the album (that's right--I said ALBUM) at the Salvation Army. I think it's one of those shows you have to see to really appreciate the music, as I merely found the album interesting. Maybe seeing it would take it from interesting to amazing for me.

This is one of my favorite shows ever. The original production was filmed and shown on PBS, which is the only way I got to see it - which is probably just as well, because I might have blown a fuse if I had seen it live. I listen to the cast recording frequently. I'd love to see a revival with either Dennis Hastert or Charles Dutton as Oedipus, but as Margo has pointed out before, it's just too expensive a show to mount (ALL that cast!)

I am assumning you meant Dennis HAYSBERT, not Dennis HASTERT.
they did it two years back at the Apollo theatre, and i heard it was amazing. lee breuer's son goes to my school hahah. they did do "How Shall I See You Through My Tears" in the movie CAMP.

No he said Hastert. I think it's inspired casting. His career as a "Song and Dance" man has been more figurative than literal lately and since I suspect he might be looking for a job soon, why not?
Personally I loved him as Big Daddy in "Rooftop!" the musical version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and of course his turn as Albin in La Cage.

Hahaha - well, you can see where my mind has been! Yes, I meant Haysbert. But, as Joe pointed out, it could be . . . interesting with the other.
I saw a production of it in Kansas City in the mid-90's on a school trip. I knew very little about Oedipus or gospel music back then, but I still thought it was interesting.
I remember the daughters singing and crying at the same time being really effing cool.

I'm bumping this, because I just saw it for the first time, after renting it on iTunes. I swear, I was having a spiritual moment up in my room. lol. From the music, to the way it was staged, was just pure brilliant. Loved every second of it.

Who's that DG idiot?
I still love this. Entirely.
I saw it and don't remember much about it. I know I saw it with two friends and I don't think any of us were thrilled by it. If you need and or want any information I can pull the Playbill out.
Bumping this because I purchased it on my Apple TV for $4.99 today and it was the best $5 I have spent this year. The music, and especially the style of singing, reminded me so much of my childhood in the Baptist church. Such amazing performances by all. I hope I get to see this on stage on day.
