The Modern American Songbook post gave me an idea- What songs from 1968-now are the most iconic musical theatre songs that in the musical theatre world are considered the ultimate classics or 'standards" and could make up half of what I'm calling "The Great Musical Theatre Songbook"?
Some of mine:
1. The Ladies Who Lunch
2. Being Alive
3. Send In The Clowns
4. A Little Priest
5. Johanna
6. All That Jazz
7. What I Did For Love
I could go on and on obviously, but that's what I came up with for now. Your thoughts?
All 7 are fantastic choices. I would add some of the following, too (looking at the Tony for Best Musical Wikipedia page, so I'm going chronologically
)...
"Aquarius"
"Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"
"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"
"Sunday"
"Move On"
"Memory"
"I Dreamed a Dream"
"The Music of the Night"
"The Last Night of the World"
"I"d Give My Life for You"
"I'm Breaking Down"
"As If We Never Said Goodbye"
"Seasons of Love"
"Defying Gravity"
"I'm Here"
"I Believe"
"One Second and a Million Miles"
"Ring of Keys"
"My Shot"
"Satisfied"
"Waving Through a Window"
"Me and the Sky"
"Charming"
Yeah, that wasn't my top favorites, although I like them a lot- I was just going chronologically and didn't have time to make a whole big list.
I like a lot of yours too!
