Posted: 5/4/04 at 4:28pmPRYMATE had a whopping 13% attendance last week (up from 8.3% the week before), so they'd better pray for some major reviews tomorrow or they're history.

Posted: 5/4/04 at 4:34pmWow the grosses are pretty low. The only shows to get 100% or over are Wicked and Lion King. which isnot a surprised. But, most of the shows are very low.....i wonder why. They seem worse than last weeks.

Posted: 5/4/04 at 4:56pmI think Frozen is officially opening tonight so that might account for the low grosses.

Try lowering ticket prices so the average person can attend the theater without wondering if they'll be able to make rent the next month. Maybe than they'll get a higher attendance.

TKTS booth is a great thing as are the coupons. Getting lucky with $20 rush tickets only way to go!

Posted: 5/4/04 at 6:30pmMy sister complained that she couldn't afford to pay (full price) for Broadway shows, but I calculated that if she stopped smoking and using the vending machine every day, she could afford to buy fifteen full-price tickets to musicals.

Plum,
Please elaborate. I'm curious what facets of Broadway economics you suggest could change the current profitability, (25% higher than this time last year) or lack of, that could make Broadway more accessible.

Posted: 5/4/04 at 6:46pmPerhaps if all the Rentheads and the kids that see Wicked 48 times, would try and expand their horizons and broaden their minds, the grosses for GOOD shows, such as Frozen, wouldn't suffer. It's not the ticket prices, it's the audiences B'way, for the most part, panders to. I was not a big fan of Caroline or Change but it does breath some intelligence into the world of musical theater. And for that alone, I'm grateful.

rent is a good show.
i realize that it is frustrating that these people spend all of their time in this one theater, but that doesnt decrease the quality of the show.
you may not like it, but besides being absolutly brilliant, rent has gotten a lot of young newcomers on their feet, and that could not have done that without the rentheads.

Posted: 5/5/04 at 9:25amThank you DAME and PLUM, and you were right with Bravo. Also, Rent was once, a very long time ago, a great show but hardly worth people going into debt to afford their *habit*.

Posted: 5/5/04 at 11:59amWhats the demographic of rent heads?
#20re: re: re: The Grosses Are In
Posted: 5/5/04 at 12:09pmObviously, very young. Which does not excuse anything. Meanwhile, Frozen received raves across the board.

A lot of Rent Heads moved on to JEKYL & HYDE and than to AIDA than ROCKY HORROR than TABOO and now to WICKED. They all must around 40 years old now.
Rent used to be a great show. But in my opinion most of the magic left with the original cast. The show just doesn't have it anymore, no matter how many Spice Girls you throw in there which is a real shame because the music is still some of the best ever heard on the stage.
#23re: re: re: The Grosses Are In
Posted: 5/5/04 at 12:17pmRent has definitely just become a tourist trap.
