Where was Cubby when Ethel was around?
He could have helped her whip that nun's butt.

The musical is based on Gypsy Rose Lee's memoir, thus the title. Focusing on Lee's mother, Rose, was Laurents' idea in approaching the material.
And the font of Merman's name is also the same size as the title on the cast recording artwork. Bernadette's appears not to be because her name is longer and the font is narrow, compressed.
And I refuse to respond to the nonsense of the rebuke. Let him cry in the corner, clutching the Merman OBC and fan doll he made of Kelli O'Hara.

also, why aren't the three of them performing Together at the Tony's? Instead she's taking the stage by herself. I don't understand that.
- HUH? She will not be taking the stage alone. She is performing 'Everything's Coming Up Roses' which features Gaines and Benanti in the staging. Plue the song is short enough for them to do some of the dialogue leading into the song.
It's obvious they would want to perform a Rose showcase number for the Tonys, and this is the perfect one for LuPone.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 1:01amthat's a small technicality. they don't even get to sing. Why is it obvious that they want to showcase Rose (Patti), considering all three are nominated, and the fact that this may be the strongest ensemble ever for Gypsy.

While they don't get to sing in the number, they do some FABULOUS acting if you watch them. They are totally in the moment while Rose is in her own little world.
TOGETHER is not a strong enough or powerful enough song for the Tonys. It's obvious they'd want to showcase Patti because this revival is ALL about Patti. Heck. It is PATTI LUPONE GYPSY.

you just made my point, I found the ensemble (Laura, Leigh Ann, and Boyd) to be even greater than Patti herself, yet you say it's ALL about Patti. I think that's a shame.
At least they could start with Together, and then Patti end with a solo. That's what I would do.

How on earth does "Together" showcase the any of the work those three are doing in the show?!
Just because it has all three of them in it doesn't mean it showcases anybody. People are buying tickets because of Patti's performance. Sure, industry people are interested in seeing Laura and Boyd's performance, perhaps even more than Patti's. But the average person is buying a ticket to see Patti in GYPSY, like Rose in every other GYPSY revival before. They are doing a number to sell tickets, and apart from Laura's strip, I think they picked the best number to give you a taste, and leave you wanting more.

Posted: 6/11/08 at 12:17pmWhile Patti is the center of the show, as Rose always is, the main reason this Gypsy is successful is because of the entire cast, not simply because of her. Like I mentioned before, there is no reason why they can't start off with Together, and then she go into a solo. And I for one, did not buy a ticket just to see Patti, but to see all of the nominated actors, and fellow cast.

You obviously missed the Follies thread. This thread practically reeks of testosterone by comparison.

- How would that work? Medleys usually come off VERY flat on the Tonys. And how much time do you think they have? They only have 3.5 minutes. Which is just enough to do ROSES and the dialogue leading into the number, so I am thrilled.

am I the only one who read this thread title as "Patti LuPone topless; Merman?"
I thought it was a little overkill seeing how the Robber Bridegroom thread went down last week...

"OK, my eyes initially read this as 'Patti LuPone Topless Merman'"
I did as well. Glad to know I'm not the only one. Ooh the mind wanders...

Posted: 6/11/08 at 9:05pmI disagree. Lupone may act the scenes well, but she mangles and tortures the music, confusing fast with intense. Of all the versions of "Everything's coming up Roses" that I've seen in performance, hers is the absolute worst. I've never seen the rhythms of that number so tortured to death.

Sondheim seems to like the way she does it.
Maybe you're just a Patti Hater.
