There is a great analysis in "The Season" that talks about the development and difficulties involved. One of the interesting theories is that the reviews were so bad because the Times reviewer was late to the show after being out of town to give a lecture, causing them to hold the curtain, which infuriated the other critics.
He also talks about how the plot was softened and changed to make the Goulet character more likable to the detriment of the show.

If you listen to the podcast with Kander, he says the director butchered the book. The opening night waiting for the Times Critic had nothing to do with it. Listen and enjoy! Joel

I saw this tonight and LOVED it! In many ways, it's better than the original production (which I saw many times as a child).
I am going to see it again, and I highly recommend that if you are remotely interested in this show, make the trek to DC.
It's probably my favorite Kander and Ebb score. Lovely, lovely production.
(I will try to write more soon.)

I saw the first preview and even with the lead calling out at the last minute due to illness and the understudy having to go out on book with little preparation, I thought it was extremely well done. Quiet, introspective, and deeply moving performances. I went in not knowing anything about the show or the score and was struck as to how the score was very Sondheimesque.
Go see it (along with Kiss of the Spiderwoman).

I saw the show yesterday and found it very charming with a terrific cast. I hope you will buy tickets and see it.

I saw the original with Goulet in previews and later in the run.
It is one of my favorite shows and the score is wonderful. Really happy they are reviving it.
