Seth Rudetsky hosted a reading of The Little Dog Laughed with the 2006 Off-Broadway cast on his YouTube channel this afternoon. Julie White's agent is still a vivid creation. The other three characters remain vague, though Zoe Lister-Jones is the first I've seen to do anything interesting with the thankless role of Ellen.
It's interesting to look at what has and hasn't changed in Hollywood for gay men. The offstage playwright is upset that his gay characters are being rewritten as straight. This happened to Beane in the 90's and is also a plot-line in Craig Lucas's The Dying Gaul. Since then many studio films have been made with gay principal characters but they tend to be played by straight actors.
Male stars who come out get more opportunities now, mostly on television, but it's hard to compare the roles for men today. What's the "top tier" goal for them now? Would Mitchell be auditioning for a Marvel hero franchise?
