The Little Mermaid Musical is Back on Track with New Book

Posted: 6/23/05 at 2:36pmAriel is a character who is experiebncing her first love, almost infatuation. Personally I'd like to see someone more in the 16/17/18 age range play the role. I believe the talent is out there. It would certainly short-circuit the typical Bway dues paying for one actor, as she would almost certainly be getting a huge break, but I believe the character should really look and read "teen" in body, voice, mannerisms and face.

Got the Demo and it is interesting.
New material:
Songs for the Buddy Hackett seagull (and gull cronies). They sound very children's theatre and are not my favorites.
Prince Eric has a terrific solo.
Ursula gets a couple new songs that are very "loungey." I think Liza Minnelli should do this role now.
Ursula's Eels get a song that's creepy and appropriate.
Ariel has a "tour the town" song based on the underscoring from the movie. That's nice.
She and Eric have a very pleasant duet and the Finale has been reworked to include new music.
KingTriton also has a very stern song (sung very well here by Jeff mcCarthy). Other voices on the demo (Kerry Butler (not in the best voice), Gavin Creel (stellar), Emily skinner, Buddy Hackett). Those are the only one's I could identify. SCore needs some tweaking but could be very pleasant.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Celia Keenan-Bolger Ariel in the latest reading not so long ago? With Cheyenne Jackson as Prince Eric?

that is so exciting about the demo! I've been waiting forever to hear anything new about this show. I'm curious about the new ursula songs, on a cd set that has demo tape versions from production on the movie it includes a couple cut songs written by menken/ashman including one called "silence is golden". just wondering if they stuck that back in similiar to when they did "human again" for beauty.
btw...its my first post even though I read the boards constantly

Good to see that this is still in the works. I think it should be really cute. I was kind of under the impression it had fizzled, so im happy
