22 May 2006

Following Tarzan, now on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, and Mary Poppins, scheduled to begin previews at the New Amsterdam Theatre in October, the next likely Disney musical is The Little Mermaid, based on the hit animated film of the same name.

Playbill.com has learned that a one-week costume/movement lab for Mermaid will be held in London June 15-22. A spokesperson for the Disney musical told Playbill.com that "six London-based performers who have previously worked with choreographer Stephen Mear will be involved in the lab." No casting has been announced for the upcoming lab.

Variety has previously reported that David Ives will pen the book for the musical, which features a score by Alan Menken. Francesca Zambello will direct.

To date, Disney's Broadway offerings include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Aida and Tarzan. Visit www.disneyonbroadway.com for more information."

Woot woot!!!

Wow. This is the only Disney show I'd ever be excited to see. I wonder if I can find out where this workshop is in London and, like, spy on them.

don't read too much into this, it could just be tests ala the ones on http://www.paultheflyguy.com/index.html for what looks to be a better version of tarzan.

Stephen Mear is great (loved his SINGING IN THE RAIN, MARY POPPINS, WITCHES OF EASTWICK work). But this just reeks of "wrong." When is Disney going to stop putting the cart before the horse?

Does anyone know who will play Ariel? And will she sign?

Sign as in sign language?

Maybe, if they're smart, they'll get Bob Crowley to design and direct. He can just hang blue streamers from every square inch. Ariel won't have fins, she'll have a giant green rope instead.

Maybe Crowley and Julie Taymor can direct it together. She'll wear a green unitard with a giant fin slapped on her head.

i'm really upset to hear about this show. disney has so many awesome movie musicals that would be PHENOMINAL onstage. i hope they see its faults early in the process and say "Well, hey, what about Hercules or Hunchback?"

After being traumatized by TARZAN, I want Disney to stay far, far away from New York.

Hunchback has been done, but allegedly Disney thought that the stage version (which changed the ending back to that of the book) was too dark and elected not to bring it to Broadway in that form.

Well let's hope this turns out to be good- it could be with the right people- I mean the story and music are fun.
I would actually think Crowley could do a good job as a set designer here- he designed some great tricks in Tarzan- I still can't get over the opnening- he just needed a director to tie everything together and come up with some better blocking.
I wonder if they're staging any of this like they did in Disney MGM?

They call it a "lab" like it's a science project. Very cold-sounding.

It's "Cirque du Oi-vey."
