Hey Ya'll -
I've heard conflicting reports about the songs used in the upcoming Broadway musical. What songs from the film will make the transfer to the stage? Did Menken pen nine (9) or eleven (11) new songs for the piece? I've heard both from two or three different articles. Any insight appreciated.

Whether Menken penned 11 or 9 or whatever number of new songs for this show is irrelevant right now. The show has't even had out of town tryouts yet. During that period and the preview period, songs could be cut, rewritten, or new songs could be written. There won't technically be a frozen number list until a few days before december sixth. This is a traditional description of the process. Disney isn't really known for changing all that much during tryouts or previews, except for Tarzan.
Well the following songs will definitely be in the musical:
Under the Sea
Kiss the Girl
Part of Your World
Poor Unfortunate Souls
Also wasn't there a sailor song? Called Fathoms Below or something like that?
Yes, fathoms below is the opening number in the movie.

The demo contained the following songs:

Does anyone know if the cast recording will be available during the out-of-town tryout or not until Broadway?

There will not be a recording until a few months into the Broadway run.
The demo, for whatever reason, excludes a few songs. In the reading score there is an overture, then a song Ariel sings called "The World Above," then the opening song "Fathoms Below," a reprise of "World Above," and then it goes to "The Daughters of Triton." There is then a song called "That Oughta Show Her" that Triton and Sebastian sing. And a song later called "She's In Love" that Flounder and Merboys sing. I am pretty sure all the other songs are on the demo.

Since Mermaid is pretty much guaranteed to do well, Disney might do like they did with Beauty and Lion King and record the album before the show opens, but after the out of town tryout.

Here's a speculated song list for the show,
"According to one blog reader, they believe they have the song list (in order) for the broadway musical.
" I'm not involved with the production, but I've gathered enough legit material to come up with this songlist. This song list is based on the demo, printed material from the actual production, and the tiniest bits of speculation to fill in the gaps in terms of the order.
1. Overture/Decent Into The Sea (Orchestra)
2. The World Above (Ariel)
3. Fathoms Below (Sailors, Eric, Grimsby, Ariel)
4. The World Above - Reprise (Ariel)
5. Human Stuff (Scuttle, Gulls, Ariel)
6. Daughters of Triton (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adela, Alana) 7. That Oughta Show Her (Triton, Sebastian)
8. Wasting Away (Ursula, Flotsam, Jetsam)
9. That Oughta Show Her - Reprise (Triton, Sebastian)
10. Part of Your World (Ariel)
11. The Storm (Orchestra)
12. Part of Your World - Reprise (Ariel)**
13. She’s in Love (Flounder, Mermaids)
14. Under The Sea (Sebastian, Ensemble)
15. That World Above (Triton)*
16. Sweet Child (Flotsam, Jetsam, Ariel)
17. Her Voice (Eric)
18. Poor Unfortunate Souls (Ursula, Ariel)**
19. Positoovity (Scuttle, Gulls)
20. Beyond My Wildest Dream (Ariel)
21. Les Poissons (Chef Louie)
22. If Only / Her Voice (Eric, Ariel)
23. If Only - Reprise (Sebastian)
24. Poor Unfortunate Souls - Reprise (Ursula)
25. Kiss the Girl (Sebastian, Ensemble)
26. All Good Things Must End (Ursula)
27. Finale [If Only - Reprise / Part of Your World Reprise] (Ariel, Eric, Ensemble)
*Not sure if this song is a variation on Ariel’s earlier one, or something completely new.
**Pure speculation that this may be the Act I Finale ""

We've been over that. See my post. :)
In a Denver Post article today Alan Menken referred to a different Ursula song. I wonder if Wasting Away has been scrapped.
When I first heard the recording I thought it was scrappable, same with Human Stuff. Though both have grown on me, I could see why Wasting Away would have been replaced.

In the article they listed the songs and both Waisting Away and Human Stuff were both on it..
I must say, I'm very excited for this...
